Today was a first for me. I attended a roundtable meeting at the very impressive, One Great George Street in Westminster, to discuss a Centre for Assisitive Technology proposal. I certainly took in a lot from a few hours and met some really interesting people. What strikes me is that in a world where technology is moving so rapidly. Where we are enabled, often without thinking, from the functions and access we have. How is it that we have not mainstreamed conversations from children all the way through adulthood, about what technology can assist goals and needs. With the Local Authorities and trusts that we work with, we can see a huge shift in utilising technology to enable, when we simply add the right questions as a standard in assessments and empower practitioners with knowledge and clear pathways. Imagine what could be unlocked if that started from school reports for all students as a simple question “what technology would assist this students learning outcomes being achieved?” It is incredibly complex, there are funding, equity and infrastructure considerations. However if the goal would be to have the ability to know what can unlock someone’s individual potential, that has to the be the right direction.
