What are the benefits of CPD for youth workers? CPD can provide numerous benefits to youth workers. The following identifies some of the key advantages of active CPD participation. 1. Staying Updated Youth work isn’t static; the challenges young people face evolve. CPD ensures youth workers stay on top of new trends, research, methods and regulatory guidance. This means they can offer advice and support that’s relevant and effective. 2. Better Service: Regular training means better skills. When youth workers enhance their capabilities through CPD, they’re able to provide higher quality service. This leads to more impactful mentoring, effective communication, and successful interventions. 3. Professional Credibility: Keeping up with CPD shows dedication to the profession. It boosts a worker’s confidence and credibility, making young people and their families trust them more. It’s about becoming a reliable and valued source of support. 4. Career Growth: CPD can open doors to new opportunities. Whether it’s moving up the career ladder, specialising in a specific area, or simply keeping the job exciting, continual learning helps youth workers advance their careers. 5. Networking: Workshops, seminars, and conferences are not just about learning; they’re great for networking. These events help youth workers connect, share experiences, and collaborate with peers. 6. Personal Development: CPD isn’t just professional; it’s personal. Learning new things keeps the mind sharp and can reignite passion for the work. It’s about finding enjoyment in what you do and always striving to be better. 7. Adaptability: The world changes fast, and so do the challenges in youth work. CPD helps workers stay adaptable and resilient, ready to tackle whatever comes their way, from new digital tools to cultural shifts. 8. Cost effective learning: #CPD courses are often affordable, or even free, offering learners a chance to develop their #skills and knowledge without overextending their budget. This could be engaging with flexible learning methods such as online #courses, or reflective #learning such as reading relevant books and watching educational videos.

In an era where the rapid pace of technological advancements continuously reshapes the job market, the necessity for upskilling and reskilling cannot be overstated. We sat down with Earl Buford, President of the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning and explored how to foster an ecosystem where adult learners can thrive in today's economy, where nearly half of the enrollees in higher education are adult learners. https://bit.ly/3AqUthr

A skill is the ability to do something proficiently or well. This means that beyond acquiring a skill one also needs to be able to practise it to get good at it in order to be classified as skilled. Today is World Youth Skills Day according to the UN. The 2024 theme is YOUTH SKILLS FOR PEACE AND DEVELOPMENT. It makes sense — where youth have education and skills, our youth can contribute to society and make a living for themselves. When people feel they matter, that they are making a contribution, and they are able to make a living to support themselves, there can be peace. As Ban Ki-moon says, “In the hands of skilled youth, the world becomes a canvas for innovation.” And this is exactly what we need. I love the use of the word 'canvas' in the context of skills and innovation. It speaks to creativity, collaboration and co-creation of our future. If you are a BUSINESS OWNER, how are you upskilling youth coming into your business? Youth with little life or work experience need to be able to acquire skills and practise them to get good at them. If you are a PARENT, how are you ensuring that you upskill your children - academic qualifications plus skills will make them employable? This starts at home with life skills and learning how to do the chores. Believe it or not, this is where self-belief is born. When children get good at doing things around the home it builds their confidence and they start to believe, "I am, I can, I will." If you are an EDUCATOR, you are also an essential part of the upskilling process. While children in your care learn skills from reading and writing to maths and comprehension (among so many others), please ensure you give them the gift that will keep on giving -- instill in them curiosity and a love of learning. It will serve them well for the rest of their lives. How are you upskilling the youth around you? Comment below 👇🏼 #WorldYouthSkillsDay #SkillsDevelopment #YouthDevelopment #LoveOfLearning

Brilliant to see #appliedlearning as an example of “bringing young people closer to the world of work as solutions to disengagement" by Seema Malhotra MP FRSA Shadow Minister for Skills in her interview with Schools Week below. At Young Enterprise UK we've been advocating for practical ways of increasing access to applied learning approaches throughout the #curriculum to help prepare young people better for the future. Applied learning approaches have been proven to increase ✅student motivation ✅attitude to learning ✅securing the necessary competencies to secure future employment. ✅Its also been evidenced that #breakingdownbarriers to #learning and employing more practical and creative approaches achieves an overall increase in #attainment. #Appliedlearning #socialmobility #skills #supportingteachers

I had an opportunity to write an article for Wonkhe about the need for the new UK government to reexamine the approach to closing the skills gap. Whilst the Lifelong Learning Entitlement (LLE) is an excellent endeavour to support learning opportunities, the requirements are still too rigorous for the average worker that requires upskilling and reskilling. The article below discusses some much needed changes around the LLE and how Skills England could help unify the approach to microcredentials. At Instructure, we are working closely with many Higher Education institutions and organisations to address these very real challenges by creating avenues to support more flexible learning opportunities. https://lnkd.in/dUGAp4bm
The government should prioritise flexible learning to close the skills gap
