Indigenous people in Canada experience higher rates of disability, approximately 30% compared to the national average of 22%. The legacy of the Canadian residential school system is still being felt today. We pledge our dedication to deepening our comprehension of this dark chapter in our history. Honoring Truth and Reconciliation Day Today (September 30th), we observe Truth and Reconciliation Day—a day to reflect on the history and ongoing impacts of the residential school system on Indigenous communities in Canada. SAMH wants to take this time to honour the survivors, their families, and the children who have been impacted. We encourage everyone to engage in meaningful conversations, educate ourselves about Indigenous histories and cultures, and consider how we can support reconciliation efforts in our communities. https://lnkd.in/gHrRzxkc #TruthAndReconciliation #NDTR #EveryChildMatters🧡

On National Constitution Day, we honor the guiding principles that shape our nation’s democratic framework. This day commemorates the adoption of the Indian Constitution in 1949, a beacon of justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity. At Voice of Slum, these values resonate deeply with our mission to uplift underprivileged children and provide them with opportunities to thrive. The Constitution empowers every individual with fundamental rights, regardless of their background. It ensures that every child has the right to education, dignity, and a future filled with possibilities. For us, it is a reminder that true equality begins with action—breaking barriers of poverty and empowering slum children to dream big. Let’s come together to celebrate this day, not just as a historical milestone but as a commitment to build a society where every voice matters. Join us in echoing the essence of our Constitution: turning struggles into strengths and giving every child the opportunity to live with dignity and hope. . . . #voiceofslum #constitutionday #constitution #indianconstitution #india #constitutionofindia #freedom #justice #ambedkar #ambedkarjayanti . . . Today is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, and we are wearing orange to raise awareness about the lasting intergenerational impacts of residential schools within, and the ongoing systemic violence perpetrated toward, Indigenous communities. But wearing an orange shirt isn’t enough. True reconciliation requires intentional action to address the legacies of white-settler colonialism in all facets of our lives - our homes, our schools, our workplaces, and our governments. Action not just today, but EVERY day. Actions can look like EDUCATING yourself and others, SUPPORTING Indigenous-led movements and organizations, CONTACTING your elected government officials to address violations of Indigenous rights, and CENTERING Indigenous voices and knowledges in practice. Click here for a list of resources including a petition to support Wet’suwet’en land defenders; Indigenous-led organizations such as the Indian Residential School Survivors Society, the Native Women's Resource Centre of Toronto, and the Aboriginal Coalition to End Homelessness; and Participedia cases and Global Truth & Reconciliation Collection: https://lnkd.in/eYNNNcJQ. --- #NationalDayForTruthAndReconciliation #NDTR #OrangeShirtDay #EveryChildMatters

This year marks the fourth annual National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. It is a day to honour survivors of residential schools, intergenerational survivors and the children who returned home. We understand that the journey towards reconciliation is one that must be walked together, with respect, empathy and an unwavering commitment to justice. While our experiences are distinct, we as people of colour have a unique history of resilience and resistance. Through these shared lenses, we support Indigenous people not just in words, but through action, listening, learning and amplifying Indigenous voices. How you can help: 1. Actively listen to the Indigenous community wherever you are located 2. Learn more about the lasting impacts of the Indian Residential School System and colonial practices, which continue to manifest as systemic racism in many areas of our shared society including the economy, housing, justice, and more 3. Read the TRC’s 94 recommendations: https://lnkd.in/gAPcyC4z 4. Contact your MPs and local officials 5. Support Indigenous-led community organizations 6. Raise awareness in your community and online (you can wear orange or display red dresses and share the significance of this) United, we can break barriers and build a diverse and equitable community for all people. Thank you for being a part of this important journey. #nationaldayfortruthandreconciliation #awareness #reflection

Today, we commemorate and honour the nearly 150,000 Indigenous children who attended residential schools in Canada, many of whom did not return home. The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is also an important reminder of the work that still needs to be done to establish and maintain a mutually respectful relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) is clear that in order establish a respectful relationship, there has to be awareness of the past, acknowledgement of the harm that has been inflicted, atonement for the causes, and action to change behaviour. Education and action are the path forward and we all have an important role to play in this process. We encourage businesses across the country to deepen their understanding of our history and of local Indigenous cultures, and to review and adopt call to action 92 from the TRC Calls to Action.
