THE JOB SEEKER: - Being a graduate is not a guarantee for success. Harnessing the power of your qualifications through continuous learning, networking, showcasing your competencies, exhibiting confidence and offering solutions to the modern day problems - remain the key enablers of a successful career. It is your duty to demonstrate that the academic knowledge acquired, can solve the practical problems facing society today. Entitlement, proximity, appearance, sympathy and theory may take you a certain level - but may not last the full mile of a career. #NotByEntitlementButAbility #NotByProximityButAbility #NotByAppearanceButAbility #NotByTitleButPracticality #NotBySympathyButAbility #NotByTheoryButPracticality

I recently contributed to some internal research for this article and found it fascinating that 70% of our 10 most popular CPD/Short Courses were centred around soft skills. A year ago, I had a conversation with a business owner about the importance of teaching soft skills in an era where technical skills are increasingly outsourced to technology. In my view, the real differentiator is the ability to work well with others. They had a different perspective. I'm curious to hear your thoughts: Do you see a greater need for soft skills or technical skills in your workplace? Take a look at the article below to see which 5 of our courses were most popular over the last 12 months. Are there any other soft skills you’d like to see offered?

Future-proofing careers at university! My eagerness to explore employment opportunities in the professional scientific industry has surged since completing the Professional Employment Skills course, SCIE2001. SCIE2001 is a mandatory course for science students at the University of Newcastle. This course challenges students to write professional resumes, gain networking skills, and begin exploring what employment in the scientific industry looks like. Through SCIE2001, I have gained insight into the skills sought after by employers, empowering me to actively pursue further career opportunities. In the past, I’ve fallen custom to the stereotype that science graduates are introverted, unsociable, and lacking in interpersonal skills. However, the SCIE2001 course has shattered these imposed stereotypes. Engaging in compulsory tasks like the Elevator Pitch, I was pushed to confidently articulate my transferable skills. Initially, I found this task uncomfortable as I struggled to communicate my ideas. Pushing past these limitations, this exercise proved transformative, refining my oral communication skills. I can now say that I am equip with the skills to succinctly present myself to potential employers. To future SCIE2001 students, I wholeheartedly recommend approaching this course with an open mind and a readiness to step outside your comfort zone. This course offers an abundance of opportunities to learn the skills necessary to distinguish yourself on the job market. Finally, take advantage of the guidance provided by the demonstrators and advisors – they are always prepared to answer every question you have. Make the most of this opportunity for personal and professional growth. #SCIE2001 #StudyingSCIE2001 #BScUoN Image: Belyh, A. (2022, October 14).
