I find writing to be cathartic... It's been ten months since I chose a new career path. 🛤 I've occasionally hit a bit of smooth road, but for the most part there have been rock strewn tracks, steep climbs, slippery slopes, and 🧗 sometimes, the threat of an ambush. I've learnt a lot... - The good days and positive interactions are very rewarding. - The bad days can be frustrating and soul destroying. ☯️ - Every school, class, student and day can require different strategies. - What works for a class one day 👨🏫 may not work on future occasions. - Students can mistake kindness and patience for weakness. 🦶 (This is my current 'Achilles' Heel.') And my best experiences... - These have often been with students who I've been pre-warned about. These warnings related to students with either a history of poor behaviour or 'hard to manage' SEN conditions.⚠️ Just last week I was told that I would probably struggle to encourage a student with autism to enter, let alone stay, in the classroom. Apparently, alternative, long-term arrangements were in progress. I met this student outside of the classroom, introduced myself and asked them whether they wanted to join the class or work in a quiet space. They chose the first option. We proceeded to have a very chilled and chatty lesson. 🙂 Later that same day, a student who was regarded as 'trouble,' earnt themselves the class achievement award. 💯✅ It's these positive interactions that allow me to push on down my chosen path...clearing obstacles along the way. 👣🧭▶️ #coversupervisor #supply #education #careerchange #behaviour #autism #SEN #positiveattitude #Staffordshire

For students starting college with an undecided major, it’s good to remember that a major doesn't lock anyone into a specific career for the rest of their life. **Have you ever been bullied and harassed by the director of your own graduate program? The individual who is supposed to support you through the journey of higher education? I’m currently experiencing this, & it’s such a confusing journey.** If you have, know that you’re not alone. It’s devastating when the very person entrusted with guiding and mentoring you instead becomes a source of pain and stress. Graduate school is challenging enough without the added burden of navigating a toxic environment created by someone in a position of power. It’s okay to acknowledge that what you’re going through is not fair, and it’s okay to feel angry, hurt, or confused. But most importantly, it’s crucial to remember that this does not define your worth or the value of your hard work. Seek out allies, whether they’re peers, mentors, or professionals who can provide support and guidance. Advocate for yourself, even when it feels difficult, and don’t hesitate to reach out for help when you need it. Your mental health and well-being are more important than any program or position. No one deserves to be mistreated, especially in a space that is meant to foster growth and learning. Together, by sharing our stories and supporting one another, we can work towards creating safer, more respectful academic environments for everyone. #MentalHealthMatters #GraduateSchool #AcademicSupport #StopBullying #Resilience

This image has been floating around for about a week now. It's definitely worth discussing. So I ask, what is the cause of this? Is it a matter of social/professional anxiety? Is it a remnant of neurodivergence? Is it a lack of education on social skills and self-awareness? Is it an uprising to challenge professional expectations? I work with college students for a living and teaching professionalism as we know it to be has always been well received and executed exceptionally well. So I don't have any personal experiences with what's stated here. But I'd love to hear what you have to say... ==== #professionaldevelopment #collegestudents

Whenever you ask a student or an undergraduate how they're doing, they'll often say, "I'm fine." But the truth is, many are battling struggles that they feel they can't share because they believe no one really cares. They're fighting silent battles, dealing with the weight of unmet opportunities or the frustration of not being able to achieve their goals. These feelings need to be expressed, but the lack of support makes it hard to find a way out. #studentstruggles #undergradlife #mentalhealthmatters #hiddenbattles #studentlife #universitychallenges #silentstruggles #mentalwellbeing #educationpressure #supportstudents #youthstruggles #opportunitygap #unseenproblems #studentsupport #academicstress #breakingthesilence #lifepressure #goalsetbacks #youthmentalhealth #studentchallenges #universitylife #invisiblebattles

Turns out, Year 11 & 12 is not quite what most parents expect. The reality is students struggle with a lot of pressure, all at once: Starting assignments. The late-night cramming. Not feeling motivated. Procrastination. Being unsure, not having much direction. And most of the time, parents don’t know how to help and where to start. 🤷♀️ If this is sounding a bit like your child, and you want to help untangle the mess and get them back on track, we created a six-point checklist for you!
