Patients with long-term catheters will often have bacteria in their urine; this is not necessarily indicative of an infection. Four key principles of CAUTI prevention interventions. 1: avoid catheters when possible 2: use an aseptic technique when inserting a urinary catheter 3: maintain the catheter according to best-practice guidelines 4: review the urinary catheter daily to determine when to remove it.
