The PolarX Limited 2024 Scoping Study update has delivered significant boosts in projected economic returns primarily from improvements in metals recovery and concentrate grades from recent test work: • Conventional cleaner flotation test work has improved Caribou Dome results with 87.9% #copper recovered to a marketable concentrate grading 21.7% copper. • These significant metallurgical improvements deliver boosted projected returns including the pre-Tax NPV doubling from A$310M to A$625M and a Pre-Tax IRR increase from 38.6% to 73.9%. Asian Battery Metals PLC (ASX:AZ9) managing director Gan-Ochir Zunduisuren sits down with Proactive’s Tylah Tully to talk through the massive sulphides the company has intersected in drill hole OVD026 at the Oval Copper-Nickel-PGE Project within the broader Yambat Project in Mongolia. This new intersection is 100 metres northwest of a prior intersection (OVD021), potentially representing an extension of known massive sulphide mineralisation. Drill hole OVD026 intersected 19.3 metres of combined mineralisation, including 1.9 metres of massive sulphide at 105 metres and 2.4 metres of semi-massive sulphide at 102.6 metres. The intersection’s average mineral content comprises 3.0% chalcopyrite, 2.0% pentlandite, 27.0% pyrrhotite and 2.0% pyrite (visual estimates). True thickness of the massive sulphide is 1.4 metres. The Great Copper Race is officially on. I've been researching into the many facets of the copper supply/demand equation for 8 years. At first I thought if the global copper supply did become tight due to the many pressures on the pipeline (e.g. lack of exploration and investment in new mines due to low copper prices, fading old giant mines, geopolitical and environmental factors etc.) there would always be a solution. For example, substitutes for the red metal using aluminium, graphene, niobium, tin, fibre etc. would appear before the market allowed the humble utility metal copper to become too expensive. But no such alternative is readily and economically available in sufficient quantity in the marketplace as yet. There are marked changes of course, such as plastic pipes being used instead of copper in domestic infrastructure and copper telephone lines being replaced by fibre etc. but these are a drop in the ocean compared to the growing overall demand.  As for my research into copper demand itself, growing environmental concerns highlighted the urgent need for global electrification by cleaner energy forms other than burning fossil fuels, whilst developing countries needed increasingly improved infrastructure, with copper vital in the solution to both issues. China of course was(and still is) a great consumer of copper with the generally accepted statistic of 50% of annual global copper supply being eaten up by this industrial giant. Add to the demand the recent growth of AI, EVs, use of battery driven tools and machinery, solar and wind power etc. the clear gestalt that forms is that for the moment at least copper is a vital component of the world’s attempted shift to electrification and decarbonisation, while lack of foresight, investment in the future and a mix of many factors have conspired to bring the world to the growing realisation that each and every country will have to find a way to secure it’s own copper needs.
