💡 Learnings from the DataIQ 100 Discussion roundtables The annual DataIQ 100 Discussion in London, which took place last month on the beautiful grounds of Armoury House, The HAC, featured exclusive roundtables where senior data leaders discussed critical topics such as addressing #AI's technical skills gap and exploring effective collaborations between data teams and marketing departments. Attendees participated in three roundtable rotations during the morning session, networking with diverse peers and gaining valuable insights to address their own business needs. ➡ Technical skills shortage During a discussion, the focus was on addressing the challenges of recruiting and retaining tech talent, specifically for new AI and generative AI tools. This has been a persistent issue for #data leaders, exacerbated by the recent surge in demand for skills needed to effectively utilise new technological investments. ➡ Data and marketing One member of the roundtable explained how sentiment is a key data tool for their product offerings, and they have been working closely with the marketing team to develop new sentiment tools for social media and other public arenas of expression. They complemented what the previous member had said about making sure marketing understood the needs of the data team as the KPIs for marketing seldom overlapped with those of the data office. ➡ Data governance, democratisation, and self-service with AI There was a divide among the roundtable participants as to whether it would be more optimal to bring governance, self-service, and democratisation together, or to keep them separated. Both approaches had their pros and cons. I do like this old post from Harvard Business School on data driven decision making: https://lnkd.in/gxq_WPhH My observations on this, having worked as a problem solver for a few years now (and I like to think as a data driven problem solver). I think most people want to be data-driven. It feels intuitive and right to make decisions backed by solid data. Where people fall short is when their actions/practices don't line up to this intent. In the linked post post there's 2 notable suggestions the authors make to shift this: "look for patterns everywhere" and "tie every decision back to data". I think these can be tied together into an even simpler principle: be curious. In my career, the times when I've had the greatest impact and generated the most value have been when my decisions were grounded in data, and when I could monitor those same datapoints to evaluate what I was implementing. These opportunities never started with a clear dataset though. I've never been handed a pareto chart and told fix this. It always starts much murkier. To get to the data needed to have impact, I would always apply some variations of a few key questions. They tend to be something like this: 1. Why are things the way they are? 2. How do we know that the current state is broken? 3. How would we know if whatever we do to change this has worked? Asking curious questions like this, in my view, is enough to become a data driven problem solver - and can help you, or those you work with - become data-driven decision makers. #data #problemsolving

We've been hearing about data-driven decision making for years. But tbh, is data a must-have? Or a nice-to-have? In our personal lives, we often rely on gut feelings. Think about choosing a restaurant or deciding which movie to watch. How many of us 𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 dig through all those Rotten Tomatoes reviews to decide whether we should stream 𝗕𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗶𝗲? Also, in the workplace, it can cost a lot to collect and study data. You need to spend money to set up systems and hire people who know how to analyze the information. Plus, if you have too much data and can't figure out what to do with it, it can make things even harder. But let's weigh this against the benefits. When businesses make decisions based on data, it can make things run smoother, make customers happier, and even make more money. Recommendation engines use data to suggest things you might like, making your experience better (and of course, get you to spend more!). To truly leverage data, we need a balanced approach. Here's what we should do: 📌 Prioritize your data collection: Don't boil the ocean. Focus on first collecting the most relevant data that will drive the greatest impact. Quality over quantity. 📌 Invest in analytics tools: Figure out what you need the insight for. Then use advanced analytics tools to simplify the process of extracting insight. 📌 Empower decision makers: Give people across the org the necessary skills to interpret data and act upon insights effectively. Yes, data literacy is a thing. 📌 Iterate and improve: Keep refining data collection processes and models based on feedback and results.
