When I was a kid, I was gonna seal up too. Best freaking job in the world. I had a leader that was not good. The guy that came and take his place was an awesome guy. Not one ounce of his intent was ever about him. He wasn't being a SEAL platoon commander for himself, he was being a SEAL platoon commander to take care of 16 guys. That's what you have the opportunity to do. You've got people that you have maximum influence over their world. Whether you got 7 guys, whether you got 1000, you have the opportunity to make life good for people. As a human being, your intuition is to blame other people and make excuses. We're asking you to take ownership. As a human being, you want to protect yourself. What we're asking you to do is cover for your friend. That's counterintuitive. We're asking you to keep things simple. Guess what? What we naturally do is make things complicated. We're asking you to prioritize and focus instead of being a scatter brain. What's our instinct as humans to try and focus on a bunch of different random things? Counterintuitive. Decentralized command is. Counterintuitive. That's why we have to teach it, because what we want to do as humans, we want to control everything and make every decision. And if you try and run, your life like that will fall apart. It's counterintuitive to open your mind to other people's ideas. It's intuitive to close your mind and protect yourself. If the truth hurts you, the answer is not lies. The answer is not walking away. The answer is not covering up. The answer when the truth hurts is more truth. So what we're asking you to do is actually hard to do. And some of you, when you're tired or when you're stressed or you're up against something that seemed like it might be overwhelming, and maybe you think I don't have to win, I can get by. But guess what? We lose when we don't have to win. You gotta make the right decisions and you've got to lead for them. It's not about you. It's for your team, for your wife or your husband, son or your daughter. It's for your niece or it's for your nephew. That's what leadership is for. It's not for you that leadership is for them. So go out there and lead.
