If you look up climate tech news, the Africa climate scene has taken it by storm 🔥🚀 It is because DESPITE a decline in overall VC funding, climate tech VC funding went UP by 9% totaling $1.4B ⚡️ It's the impact of climate tech becoming a bigger priority across the world - especially in places like Africa which disproportionally have to take adaptation measures to deal with the fallout of climate change. Climate tech is now second only to fintech. However, within climate tech, renewables investing dominates - investors are gravitating to what they are familiar to because it's what they are comfortable with. This has to change. We don't have the answers yet, but one clear gap to fill is the amount of public investment into climate tech on the continent. Maelis Carraro had a fantastic point (article linked in the comments 👇🏽) that the private market has to de risk tech before governments can fund it. The large-scale experimentation going on in the US as a result of the IRA can inform strategies that African governments use. It's on those actively involved in the different IRA programs to make sure the lessons are shared and that collaboration exists. #africa #climatetech #adaptation

Sustainable Development in Africa: A Path to Equity and Innovation The transition to green and sustainable energies is a global imperative to mitigate the effects of climate change. However, the challenge lies in ensuring that this transition doesn’t lead to injustice, such as the exploitation of resources, exemplified by the cobalt extracted by children in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Africa, like the rest of the world, faces a complex dilemma between economic development and environmental protection. While it’s legitimate for each region to improve its population’s quality of life, finding fair and human rights-respecting solutions is crucial. Developed nations, historically significant contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, bear a particular responsibility in promoting ethical practices. The increasing demand for minerals from Africa requires a collaborative approach, aiming to ensure fair and human rights-respecting working conditions. Industrial Development without Compromise Africa should not be penalized for industrial development, especially considering the historical industrialization and resource consumption by some Western nations. African countries have the right to pursue development while minimizing environmental impacts. The transition to green energies must be accompanied by measures that promote equity, transparency, and corporate social responsibility. Equitable partnerships between developed and developing nations, with financial and technological support, are essential for a successful transition. Call for Responsible Innovation African players in tech and collective intelligence have a crucial role in creating innovative and sustainable solutions. Encouraging responsible innovation, focusing on respecting human rights and the environment, can be the driving force for positive transformation. Collaboration between the public and private sectors, both nationally and internationally, is essential to guarantee a fair transition to sustainable development in Africa. Discussions should extend to political, economic, and social levels to develop inclusive policies and exemplary practices. Conclusion: A Sustainable Future for Africa Africa can reconcile industrial development and environmental protection by embracing principles of equity and responsible innovation. By sharing this perspective within your network, you contribute to raising awareness and mobilizing around a vision of sustainable development for the African continent.
