How do we achieve genetic improvement? Selection and mating the best to the best is a laymen's answer. What about when what is 'best' changes? Keep selecting. What if we lose our genetic diversity from which to select? Then we are in trouble... As are some of our breeds of livestock that may not be competitive in today's production systems and mainstream markets. But they matter, and they represent a wealth of genetic diversity. And there is an organization focused on preserving these breeds: The Livestock Conservancy. Why am I posting about them here?
