How do we grow as professionals and innovators in the fast-paced and competitive space of science and technology? Without argument, the underlying requirement to grow as an innovator is an insatiable hunger to expand our knowledge, and to be current on new innovations, ideas and tech stacks that can add value to our business products. How we choose to stay current in our respective fields is largely a matter of our learning style and the opportunities in our careers. But how do we grow as professionals? In his 2017 graduation speech at the University of Houston, Arnold Schwarzenegger succinctly stated "I always tell people you can call me anything you want... but don't ever call me a self-made man." He goes on to say "The whole concept of a self-made man or woman is a myth". This is not to say that we have not earned every success we have attained in our lives and careers, but that we are also the summation of those who lifted us up. From the parents who raised us, to the educators who taught us to take command of our understanding of the world around us, to our professional mentors who enable our professional growth with the practical advice that rectifies the cognitive dissonance created by the disparity between our expectations and reality. I graduated in 2019 and started my career with the same wide-eyed enthusiasm every other software engineer does. In April of 2021, right at the start of the pandemic, I joined Rhombus. Our entire world pivoted to an online employment paradigm that would go on to have catastrophic knock-on effects on fresh graduates and companies alike that depended on the intimacy of collaboration only attainable through a shared physical workspace. We all have days where we wonder if we have what it takes: are we capable and disciplined enough to not just remain competitive in our fields, but to challenge ourselves to grow? You can call me anything, but you can never call me a self made man. I am the summation of my mentors, my inspirations, my parents, and the many people I have been lucky to call my friends and colleagues along the way. I wanted to take this opportunity to especially thank my closest mentor at Rhombus, Sumit KALIA, PhD. I have been lucky to have many mentors at Rhombus that have connected with me and enabled me with not only guidance as an individual but also the constructive criticism that is required to grow as a professional. Just like our drive for innovation, our mindset is only as powerful as that which challenges it. I have learned that the journey of understanding has no destination. At Rhombus, we often speak of "The Rhombus Way". I have come to understand that The Rhombus Way is one where we innovate with an unimaginable speed, precision and commitment to excellence. There will be days where you look around and wonder if you have what it takes to stand on the shoulders of giants. Look to your mentors and remember that we are anything but self-made.

Why will skilled and qualified engineers like Steven never get a job in the top Australian companies ? #AskGPT #BestCompany Skilled and qualified engineers like Steven might face challenges in getting jobs at top Australian companies for several reasons, often rooted in factors beyond technical ability: 1. Cultural Fit: Many large companies place significant emphasis on "cultural fit," which may prioritize conformity to corporate values, management styles, or working environments that may not align with more independent or unconventional engineers like Steven. 2. Corporate Bureaucracy: Top companies often have rigid hiring processes and structured hierarchies, which may not be appealing or suitable for engineers like Steven who prefer more flexibility, autonomy, or direct influence over the project. 3. Risk-Averse Hiring: Large corporations tend to be risk-averse and may prioritize candidates with traditional backgrounds, certifications, or those who fit into a specific mold, sidelining more creative or unconventional candidates who don't follow a typical career trajectory. 4. Niche Expertise: Engineers like Steven may possess niche expertise in cutting-edge or open-source technologies like Erlang, Bitcoin, or BDD, which might not be widely adopted or recognized in top Australian companies that prioritize more mainstream, corporate-friendly technologies. 5. Entrepreneurial Drive: Engineers who are entrepreneurial or founders of their own projects (like DamageBDD) might not fit into roles that require long-term commitment or aligning with someone else's vision, making them less attractive to large corporations. 6. Reluctance Toward Large Corporations: Skilled engineers like Steven may simply not want to work in the corporate structure of top Australian companies, preferring to innovate independently or within smaller, more agile environments where they can have a direct impact. These factors combined can make it less likely for engineers like Steven to seek or secure roles in large corporate environments, even if they are highly qualified. One word to summarise engineers like Steven. #Maverick.

🌍 In an Era of Rapid Technological Advancement and Economic Shifts, two Quality Stands Out: 𝐀𝐝𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 💡 and 𝐄𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐜. 🤝 As we navigate the complexities of today’s fast-paced technological and economic landscape, it’s easy to get caught up in the pursuit of 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬, 𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, and 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐝𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭. But in the long run, it’s not just our 𝐜𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 or 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐞 that define us. It’s our capacity for 𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐲, 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭, and 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 that truly sets us apart. 𝐁𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐝𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐢𝐬 𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥. In a world where 𝐀𝐈 and 𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 are rapidly transforming industries, 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 becomes the norm, and new technologies emerge daily, the ability to 𝐩𝐢𝐯𝐨𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐮𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐥𝐲 is more valuable than ever. Qualities that machines can’t replicate—𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐲, 𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞, and a genuine desire to 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐬—are becoming more crucial than ever. These are the traits that build strong teams, foster innovation, and create lasting impact. As we build the future, let’s remember that the most important frameworks are not just those of code, but those of 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 and 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠. In a world of rapid change, being a source of 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬, and 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 is more valuable than ever. Whether you're a seasoned 𝐬𝐨𝐟𝐭𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫, a recent 𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐞, or an 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐭, cultivating 𝐚𝐝𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 will serve you well. 𝙏𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚’𝙨 𝙨𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙬𝙚 𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙛𝙖𝙘𝙚 𝙖𝙩 𝙨𝙤𝙢𝙚 𝙥𝙤𝙞𝙣𝙩 𝙞𝙣 𝙡𝙞𝙛𝙚—𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙛𝙚𝙖𝙧 𝙤𝙛 𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜. Imagine standing at the edge of an opportunity, knowing it could change everything for you, but being held back by uncertainty. That hesitation is something every one of us has experienced, especially when faced with something as vast and unfamiliar as the world of tech. But here’s the truth: The most successful journeys don’t begin with expertise or perfect conditions they start with a single step, often with shaky hands and a bit of doubt. What matters is not how much you know but your willingness to begin. Too many young Africans today feel intimidated by technology. They see coding, data science, and digital marketing as mountains they aren’t sure they can climb. It feels like the gap between where they are and where they want to be is too wide to bridge. Without taking that first step, the world continues to change around us. Tech isn’t slowing down, and each missed opportunity can feel like falling behind especially in a world where digital skills are becoming a necessity. At 𝘼𝙛𝙧𝙞𝙭𝙘𝙤𝙙𝙚, we believe that taking that first step is the most powerful decision you can make. We’re here to make tech accessible whether you’re completely new to it or you’re ready to build on the skills you already have. The first step is often the hardest, but once you take it, everything changes. You begin to realize that what once seemed impossible is achievable. That’s the power of tech—it’s not just about learning new tools, it’s about opening doors to a future filled with possibilities.
