You might be like me, super comfortable in a very easy life - at least in comparison to people living under constant threat of death and horror elsewhere in the world. You might also, like me, be sitting with the question: 'the world is on fire - what's mine to do?' But I'm not an #activist, you might say. I can't get out to marches or do things that change the world. Me neither. But the practice of armchair activism has a lot going for it. Here are two small things you might consider - small 'activist moves', if you like. And if you are a poet, you might especially love them. The first is a raffle to support the hundreds of thousands displaced people who are facing constant assault and starvation, without daily necessities. For as little as £2 you can make a difference and win some wonderful prizes donated by poets (including a bespoke poem from @NikitaGill, folks!!). Thank you Rozalie Hilton for being such an important part of this. The second is to consider supporting a new poetry publication, founded and edited by Tom Hirons. Clarion was set up to give new writers a voice, especially those in marginalised communities. The second edition has just landed on my doormat and focuses on poems about war. This is a different form of #activism - making sure that we don't look away from the difficult stuff, and also supporting creative expression and soul work when there's not too much space for it, generally. There’s a powerful moment in Dead Poets Society where Robin Williams’ character, Mr. Keating, reminds us: "And medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love—these are what we stay alive for." This quote hits deep because it touches something fundamental about the human experience—the need for more than survival, the yearning for meaning, beauty, and connection. But in a world that increasingly prioritizes STEM fields and job-ready skills, have we lost sight of the importance of the humanities? Have we reduced our education systems and even our nonprofit missions to vocational training, sidelining the very things that inspire creativity, critical thinking, and soul-driven work?

Why would someone spend five years writing a book? I often wondered that myself during the years it took me to write my book, "Philanthropy for All."
