This riddle brings back a lot of childhood memories for me. Just that, I didn't know this had an important business lesson hidden in it. The riddle is that it is a dark night, and there is a family of 5 that needs to cross a bridge suspended over a river. The only light available is a lamp which could only burn for 30 minutes. Up to two members can cross each time. Different members take different amounts of time to cross, and the time they take must be at the pace of the slower one. The time taken for each member is as shown: Grandpa - 12 mins Father - 8 mins Wife - 6 mins Brother - 3 mins Husband - 1 min For example, if the husband and the wife were to cross together, it would take 6 minutes for them to cross the bridge. Many people you know, including family and friends, will not support you. Why? Because they see you differently than strangers. Family may view you as a mother, father, sister, brother, niece, nephew, or cousin, which is the only way they will ever see you. Family tends to think of you at a certain age or a certain period in your life, and that memory of you is locked in their minds. Many will not attend your event(s), read your writing, or listen to your interview, much less purchase your goods or services. Friends often think of you as your family does, or they may not want you to exceed beyond their level. Thus, they will not speak of you in terms of succeeding, striving, or gaining momentum. Family and friends whether they are consciously aware of it or not may sabotage your efforts; especially, if that means that you may change. For example, if family members or friends know you are watching your weight, they may hand you a piece of cake and say, "A little won't hurt you." Strangers see you differently. They have no preconceived ideas of you, only who you are today: your knowledge, your business, or your professional background.

I love the Looney Tunes! Some of my favorites are the Wile E. Coyote and Roadrunner cartoons. Time after time, the Coyote attempts to catch the Roadrunner. And inevitably the plan blows up (often literally) in his face. The Coyote has a dream, But before he can even truly begin, his plan breaks down due to a consequence he couldn’t possibly foresee. Do you have dreams for the future? Maybe there’s a passion you have that you’d love to explore, but your job just doesn’t provide you the opportunity to take advantage of it. Maybe there’s a place you’ve always wanted to visit, but just can’t afford right now. Maybe you’ve experienced the challenges of starting out your financial life, and you want to help your child prepare for the future. Whatever your dreams are, the sad fact is there are problems that could happen to you at a moment's notice and change everything irrevocably. When I was a paramedic, nobody was expecting me. Nobody had a car accident, a bad fall, or a heart attack on their calendar. We’d all like to believe that these are things that happen to someone else. But as one of my favorite comic strips once said, “...unfortunately we’re all someone else to someone else.” If you want to expand further from where you are, you have to make sure that what you currently have is secure.
