Mentors are guides. Mentors are invaluable guides who provide direction, support, and wisdom to help others achieve their goals. Mentorship in any field offers numerous advantages for both mentors and mentees, including personal, professional, and organizational benefits. The relationship fosters growth, encourages skill development, and ensures the transfer of valuable knowledge and experience. I recall when I first started my career as a fresh graduate at M-Savings and SME Investment. I was entrusted with the responsibility of ensuring smooth production processes while maintaining strict quality control compliance. The pressure of meeting production targets and deadlines, coupled with ensuring regulatory compliance, was daunting. However, having a mentor during this period was instrumental in helping me navigate these challenges. One significant experience that stands out was when we faced a particularly tight production target. My boss asked for my opinion on whether the target could be met given the limited time frame. I replied, “It’s not possible.” His response was both firm and transformative: “Never tell me it’s not possible.” That statement shifted my perspective, and with his guidance, we achieved the seemingly impossible target. Another memorable moment occurred during a drive to the company. My mentor shared a piece of advice that has stayed with me: “You must always learn to look ahead and not focus solely on your present state or challenges.” These words resonated deeply and have continued to influence how I approach obstacles in both my professional and personal life. There are countless lessons I could share, but these two instances highlight the impact of having a mentor who inspires resilience and forward-thinking. I remain profoundly grateful to Timothy Folami Bsc Econ, MICA, FIHCM, FIISSN. ISSS for the privilege of working under his mentorship. "I Didn't Have a Mentor Post-IIM Bangalore – One of My Biggest Mistakes" It is often said that mistakes are not bad provided you learn from them. I have made many mistakes in my life, and if I were to list my top three, "Not having a mentor in my life post completing MBA from IIMs" will definitely feature in the top three. 1. Did I never have a mentor? Yes, I did, many, up until I got into IIM Bangalore. I actively sought mentors. Hailing from a small town, Mussoorie, we didn’t have many information sources. My first mentor was my economics teacher, Professor Bisht. He helped channelize my energy and gave me a concrete goal – Abhishek, try to get into SRCC. I made this my goal, and it helped me do away with chaos and confusion in my life. I got into SRCC. During college life as well, I actively sought mentorship. I was confused about whether I should try for IAS or IIMs. One of my mentors then logically convinced me why trying for IIMs made sense. I made that my goal and ultimately got into IIMB. 2. Why didn’t I have a mentor post IIMs? With honest introspection, I can pin it down to two reasons: (i) Once I got into IIMB, a bit of arrogance and confidence set in. I was confident that I could face the world since I had a degree from one of the world’s premier institutes. (ii) Some years post IIMB, when life experiences humbled me, I hesitated from seeking a mentor, thinking, "Who will have time for me?" or "They might have a low opinion of me." 3. Why should one have a mentor(s) in their life? I could quote from extensive literature on this subject, but I would like to keep this personal as well. Firstly, it should not be just any mentor but a good mentor who is invested in your story and success. The most important aspect of having a mentor is the feeling of warmth and care. Knowing that someone is there who cares about you makes you feel important, safe, and, most importantly, accountable for your actions. A good mentor will help you channelize your energy and set actionable goals to realize your dreams. They can also open doors for you by making introductions and referrals. In short, one of my key pieces of career advice to all my students is to proactively seek good mentors. However, don’t see mentorship as a one-way street. Try to find ways to be of some value to your mentor. In my next post on mentorship, I will share how you should approach someone to be your mentor. Again, I will not refer to literature on this but will talk to industry professionals and ask them to share their honest perspectives. I will talk to seasoned professionals as well as young postgraduates on this matter.
