Pilots, aviation-industry officials and regulators said spoofed Global Positioning System (GPS) signals are spreading beyond active conflict zones near Ukraine and the Middle East, confusing cockpit navigation and safety systems and taxing pilots’ attention in commercial jets carrying passengers and cargo. The attacks started affecting a large number of commercial flights about a year ago, pilots and aviation experts said. The number of flights affected daily has surged from a few dozen in February to more than 1,100 in August, according to analyses from SkAI Data Services and the University of Zurich of Applied Sciences. Modern airliners’ heavy reliance on GPS means that fake data can cascade through cockpit systems, creating glitches that last for a few minutes or an entire flight. #GPS #Spoofing is a threat to safety & efficiency of global #aviation. Unfortunately there aren't many/any globally available systems that provide position and time that we can use in systems like #eGPWS. Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning Systems use a GPS position to determine where you are on a global map. The system then compares the terrain to the aircraft's path and warn of a collision risk and then says "Pull Up" to the pilots. Before eGPWS and it's #GPWS (that uses a radar altimeter, subject to 5G interference, only only provides a few seconds of warning) there were 2-3 fatal commercial Controlled Flight Into Terrain (#CFIT) accidents annually globally. eGPWS along with other safety systems are compromised by GPS Spoofing and present a serious risk to safety that needs to be mitigated. Mitigation starts by knowing where GPS spoofing is happening to safeguard systems and provide Situational Awareness (#SA) to the pilots. Additionally we can warn the pilots when we #Spirent detect that their aircraft is spoofed. We can also let them know when they are clear of the area or have residual issues. There are regulatory requirements to give pilots this information (CFR 121.601 requires dispatch to provide information on irregularities of navigation facilities.)

Looks like ADSB is becoming more acceptable for aircraft controlling as long as a WAAS type ground backup or augmented ground GPS signal with stronger signals can be proven as less susceptible to jamming or spoofing.

**Title: Navigating Uncertain Skies: The Role of Transponders in Conflict Zones 🌐✈️** (A Private Ultralight Pilot's Perspective on Airspace Safety Amid Conflict). --- As a private sports ultralight pilot, the cancellation of my planned flight this morning due to escalating tensions and subsequent airspace closures over Israel was a significant disappointment. The safety concerns are palpable, especially with the ongoing conflict which leads to frequent, sometimes abrupt changes to airspace regulations and rerouting of flights. The transponder on my Savannah S ultralight, equipped with a robust 100hp Rotax engine, is more crucial now than ever. This device, integral to modern aviation safety, communicates with secondary surveillance radar (SSR) systems used by air traffic control (ATC). It transmits identifying information that helps ATC monitor and track the aircraft's position within controlled airspace. In regions experiencing military conflict, a transponder supports the identification friend or foe (IFF) systems. While primarily military, its adaptation for civilian use significantly enhances safety. By emitting specific signals, it clarifies that my aircraft is civilian, reducing the risk of misidentification and ensuring that my flight is marked as non-hostile. Though the skies above may currently be less welcoming, by keeping abreast of aviation authority updates and adhering to all safety advisories, I remain hopeful for the resumption of flights when conditions permit. The use of transponders not only complies with regulatory requirements but also crucially underpins the safety of aircraft operations by ensuring that they are correctly identified during heightened security measures. --- Looking forward to peace ☮️ clearer skies and safe flying adventures.
