Who you choose to be your co-investors matters. There is a lot of ink spilled to founders about how important it is for them to choose the right investors. We talked about this recently in our newsletter (I’ll drop the link below if you are interested in subscribing). But today I want to focus on how important it is for investors to choose the right co-investors. This is something we think about a lot at Symphonic. When we are deciding what investment to make, we don't stop at diligence after getting excited about the opportunity and the founder. An important part of our diligence is interviewing the syndicate of investors. The best founders are able to lean on the people who know their business the best - their investors - to help them through critical growth challenges. We know from experience that this support can make or break a company, so we take a critical look at who is around the cap table before we say yes. Questions we ask: ▶ How much more capital do you plan to invest in this company? ▶ How involved do you plan to be as an investor and how do you generally support founders when they are struggling? ▶ (and for precious investors) Do you see this company as a fund returner for you? Why or why not? These are great questions for founders to ask their investors too! The more you evaluate the people who could join your cap table, the better equipped you are to be successful.
