Even energy superpowers seriously investing in and appreciative of world class mass transit systems. Pakistan has to tackle imported oil dependency long term. Foreign investment in midstream oil, (refineries) downstream oil (retail petrol pumps) even when it comes with Aramco like brand name should not impress us to the point where we lose vision, foresight, long term strategy.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, has set out the emirate's ambitions for every Dubai Metro train to arrive on time. The rail service has transported 2.4 billion passengers since its first trains hit the tracks 15 years ago, with an impressive punctuality rate of 99.7%. “We want it to be 100%,” Sheikh Mohammed said. “Commitment to appointments is a culture, a virtue, and a noble cultural value." On December 2, 1971, a bold vision was realised as six emirates came together to form the United Arab Emirates, with Ras Al Khaimah joining a year later. At the heart of this unity was Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, a leader whose dream was not just to unite, but to create a nation rooted in harmony, progress, and sustainability. Sheikh Zayed's vision was simple yet profound: build a nation that preserves its heritage while embracing the future. He believed that the UAE’s strength lay in its unity, symbolised in the flag's four colors - courage, peace, hope, and strength. Today, as the flag flies high, it reminds us of the resilience and ambition that have guided this nation for 53 years. The UAE's journey is reflected in its landmarks. The Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world, stands not only as an engineering marvel but as a testament to Sheikh Zayed’s belief that ambition has no limits. Yet, even amidst this progress, the UAE has never lost sight of its natural heritage. Its mangrove forests, nurtured and expanded, are living examples of Sheikh Zayed’s love for the environment, safeguarding biodiversity and ensuring a sustainable future for generations. Having witnessed 28 years of the last 53 first hand, I can only reflect with gratitude. With over 200 nationalities living and thriving together, the UAE has become a global beacon of cultural diversity. This harmony echoes Sheikh Zayed’s ethos of mutual respect and tolerance. Meanwhile, age-old traditions like falconry continue to be celebrated, reminding the world of the deep cultural roots that ground this modern nation. From launching world-class sustainability projects like Masdar City to becoming a global hub for innovation and connectivity with bustling airports like DXB and AUH, the UAE’s progress has been meteoric. But what truly sets the UAE apart is its commitment to balancing progress with its founding values. As fireworks light up the skies this National Day, we celebrate not just 53 years of growth but a legacy of staying true to the vision of Sheikh Zayed. The UAE's story is a reminder that when a nation holds fast to its roots while reaching for the stars, the possibilities are endless. #UAENationalDay #SpiritOfTheUnion #UAE53 #UAEUnity #ProudToBeUAE
