In 1927 in Plains, Georgia, U.S.A., a three-year-old boy named Jimmy Carter lived next door to an auto mechanic, Francis Smith, and his pregnant wife, Allie. That August, Allie went into labor, and Jimmy's mother, a nurse, helped deliver her daughter. The next day, little Jimmy went next door and peered into the crib. The baby inside was named Rosalynn. As a teenager, "Rosie" had a fierce crush on Jimmy, but he was three years older, and apparently took little notice of the shy kid next door. During WWII, he left town to join the Naval Academy. One day in the summer of 1945, Jimmy returned to Plains on vacation. While riding in the rumble seat of a friend's Ford, he looked toward the United Methodist church and saw Rosie, now seventeen and all grown up, standing out front. He was gobsmacked. Jimmy hopped out of the rumble seat and asked her to the movies. She jumped right in. He came home that night and told his mother that the baby she'd delivered seventeen years earlier was the girl he was going to marry. This week, on July 7th, Jimmy and Rosalynn will be celebrating their 76th wedding anniversary. Theirs is the longest marriage in presidential history. They
Late, late one night my pal Dean Stoneburner and I climbed through this 4' door into a small sushi restaurant in Akasaka, Tokyo in 1987 and found ourselves sharing a table with Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter from Plains, Georgia. Already wasted, we knew who they were, but never let on, and being the type of graceful people they were, neither did they. A wonderful evening spent discussing music and movies, history and being in love. Simply unforgettable.
Congratulations to the Carters! A positive marriage example for all of us in today’s challenging times.
Not bad for a peanut farmer, obviously his career in the Navy didn't last. He graduated 77th in his Annapolis class, he wasn't actually in WWII nor Korea. I did hear he had to turn down a suitcase advertisement gig, after leaving the White House.
How and more importantly, why did this story about a loving, long lasting relationship become so denigrated by bringing up his "failures" of yesterday vs. discussing the successes of today. The political discourse here is about things that happened decades ago. This is a story about today! Complaining about yesterday is like complaining about the weather..it's easy to do because there isn't anything one can do to change it. If you must bring up mistake of yesterday, get in your time machine and do something about it. If you aren't fortunate to have a time machine, try making today a better day by doing something that will add value to society...........just like Ole' Jimmah Cartar does.
Great story! No delivery involved but our youngest son was born July 1st, 1976. Betsy Lazzara was born two days later, same hospital, St. Vincent’s Indianapolis. Two years later they moved across the street and they two shared birthday parties and families were close friends. At 7 Betsy’s parents moved across town. 30 years later they met again and started dating! They married 15 months later and have been married 9 years now! Both great stories! 👏👏👏👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️❤️
As a fellow ex-naval officer, in the 70s a lot of my squadron mates - and service/military-wide felt that President Carter was too much of a pacifist to hold firm against the soviet threat of that scary final period of the cold war. But just as his faith has been proven to be so very genuine over the decades, certainly his dedication to peace has also endured the scrutiny of his naysayers over the past half-century since his Potus term expired. Active into his 90s with honorable work, I believe that he has earned the respect of nearly the entire nation - and probably the world over. Can't wait for the documentary movie on his life (including this rumble seat story!) sometime in the years ahead. If the Richard Williams and the Williams sisters can be eulogized, this upstanding human being deserves at least 2 ! Any idea of which actor could portray him best ? A real septagenarian/octogenarian - or via the magic of hollywood makeup ?!
Nice & godly man.....drop mic!! BUT worst president ever! Weakened the nation globally, emboldened Iran, and the world has never recovered. Destroyed the economy in a way that no one realized.
My wife and i recently celabrated our 44th wedding anniversary. Three children and seven grandchildren. Its been a wondrful adventure.
I have danced with Roselyn! Jimmy gave a party in the basement of the governors mansion for his college interns, plus some other college students, who I didn't know. The band started playing some Latin American music. Most of the people didn't know Latin dance styles - except some Cuban American students from Emory University and moi. I had learned danzas Latinas in Mexico the previous year. Jimmy came over to us and asked, "Anita, would you be upset if Roselyn took your place with Richard a bit. She wants Richard to teach her Latin American style dancing. I can't dance." Roselyn is a beautiful woman, inside and out. She has the magic of being eternally the "girl next door," but also a graceful princess. By the way, Jimmy did not go straight to the US Naval Academy. The first year, he was in our Navy ROTC unit at Georgia Tech then transferred to Annapolis. Below is Jimmy's Freshman class photo at Georgia Tech.
“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails” (1 Corinthians 13:4-8). 😉🇺🇸
