Foreign Policy Manipulation by Superpowers I make the provocative claim that a country's foreign policy is not truly independent, but rather an expression of the ambitions of foreign powers that prop up the regime. This speaks to the concept of client states and spheres of influence in international relations. The idea that a government's survival depends on the support of external actors, who then dictate foreign policy, is a common critique of authoritarian regimes allied with global superpowers. The regime trades away national interests for regime security.

The ongoing coercion by the PRC and Russia to stop Taiwan (ROC) remaining independent of mainland! Here is the key Issues from ISW: Key Takeaways The ROC government’s November 6 petition to disband the Chinese Unification Promotion Party (CUPP) and indictment of agents acting on behalf of the PRC illustrates the extensiveness of PRC infiltration and political warfare efforts in Taiwan. The PRC Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) released coordinates demarcating its claimed territorial sea baseline around Scarborough Shoal on November 10. The PRC’s announcement of a territorial sea baseline around Scarborough Shoal likely aims to legitimize its territorial claim by fabricating a legal basis using internationally recognized maritime law concepts. PRC Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu met in Beijing for the 19th round of PRC-Russia strategic security consultations. The PRC's and Russia’s differing emphases signal the partnership’s shared interests with distinct priorities.

Big news for US-Georgia relations: On July 11, the U.S. Congressional Foreign Affairs Committee passed the MEGOBARI Act (Mobilizing and Enhancing Georgia's Options for Building Accountability, Resilience, and Independence Act). Key points of the MEGOBARI Act: - Requires reports on improper influence and sanctions evasion in Georgia - Calls for examination of Russian intelligence assets in Georgia - Mandates identification and potential sanctioning of key individuals undermining democracy in Georgia - Establishes a democracy monitoring task force for Georgia's pre-election environment - Proposes enhanced US-Georgia cooperation, including trade, visa liberalization, and security assistance, contingent on democratic progress. This act aims to support Georgia's democratic trajectory and Euro-Atlantic aspirations while addressing concerns about democratic backsliding and Russian influence. https://lnkd.in/d_fjqU8n #USForeignPolicy #Georgia #MEGOBARI #Democracy

When aid is used to influence domestic policies, it can undermine the constitutional mandate to protect national sovereignty and security. This dynamic can create tensions between the government’s obligations to its citizens and the demands of foreign powers.

Last week, we published some excellent analysis by DC correspondent Elia Preto Martini of a diplomatic balancing act faced by Turkey's government vis-a-vis China and the protection of Uyghurs. When our team posted about it on X, we received, for the first time ever, a notification that we were being flagged for that post as some form of "platform manipulation." It's a just another troubling development in a series of them for X, but the choice of 'what' to restrict here feels important. (P.S. My latest op–ed published by LatinoAmérica21 (thank you!) asserts that Biden’s #US foreign policy for #LatinAmerica should not be a reaction to other powers. Instead, the US needs a non–“Monroeist” and more genuine approach to the region. This also means undoing Trump’s mistakes about #sanctions on #Cuba and #Venezuela but also instances regarding #Mexico and #Nicaragua: https://lnkd.in/g2XUeBUU
