The talk: "Quarkus: enjoying the process, appreciating the outcome" The speaker: Alexey Loubyansky, Principal Software Engineer at Red Hat https://lnkd.in/ejhkA8EU Quarkus was designed to significantly improve not only the performance characteristics of services developed in Java but also the developer experience. It’s important to enjoy the process and appreciate the outcome of it when it comes to software development. In this talk we’ll look into what it’s like to develop Java applications with Quarkus and how they end up being so fast and tiny in memory footprint. 🚀 Day 93 of #100DaysOfCode 🚀 Today, I completed the Water Bottles Problem! Given a starting number of full water bottles (numBottles), the task was to maximize the number of bottles I could drink by trading numExchange empty bottles for one full bottle from the market. Each time I drank a bottle, it would turn into an empty one, which I could use for exchanges to keep drinking. The solution required a simple yet efficient approach to make the most out of each bottle by strategically exchanging them. It was a great exercise in applying greedy algorithms to optimize resource usage and tackle a real-life-inspired problem. Excited to mark Day 93 as complete and keep pushing forward! 🔥💻

Here’s the video of my BSides Tampa 2024 presentation, “xz made EZ,” a layperson-friendly explanation of how a combination of social engineering and malicious programming led to the tainting of a software utility that could have made a LOT of servers vulnerable, if not for a *very* lucky break. In this video, I’ll cover - Back doors, and a digression about the Cult of the Dead Cow - The Unix utility tar, and a beginner’s guide to file compression - When open source projects are both important and unexciting - Project maintainer burnout and how a malicious party exploited it to take over the xz project - How software is compiled and the basics of software libraries - How xz was tainted, and how the tainting was discovered - Lessons we can take away from the incident It’s all here, in this informative, entertaining, and layperson-friendly presentation — and YES, there’s an accordion performance!
