Breakthroughs in AI, and the rise of commoditized online courses from nontraditional providers, are increasing the pressure on universities. They must deliver quality differentiated teaching to a wider range of students who are looking to invest in lifelong learning and build skills over a longer (or shorter) period than the traditional four-year degree. Student needs are changing, and they increasingly demand a return on the time and money they invest in tuition. The above conditions mean that individual institutions need to make strategic decisions around their future. Universities need to embrace changes in both how they are structured and how they operate and teach. They must reexamine their strengths in a global context and rethink traditional models around their missions of research and teaching to find their place in a changing world. Arthur D. *Sigh* This might appeal to those who always wanted to hear that edTech has failed so that they could go back to their old ways! While I do not have 6 books and several papers published in my name, I am unwilling to suspend intelligence. Firstly, every piece of digital tech is not edTech. The mouse/keyboard/router are not edTech. Hence, a laptop and a tablet are not edTech. They are hardware. The new EV school bus is not edTech. Oracle ERP or Salesforce, while tech, is not edTech. An interactive panel is not edTech. Khan Academy is edTech. Mathigon is edTech. Secondly, all that this article declares is that human beings (esp. the younger ones) have always struggled with attention & focus and hence, giving them access to distraction, in abandon, is not effective for learning. We Know That! Way before Hattie, OECD and J-Pal. To give you a parallel to the "beautiful world before tech" (which is used to refer to digital tech), imagine a 1980's classroom where every student had their hardcopy textbook AND several hardcopy comics and flipbooks around them. I don't see the student learning better than whatever 1890's version of a classroom we conjure up. Should we declare textbooks a failure? Because they also allowed hiding comics within? Embedded in this article is a weak disclaimer (lest someone spot the fallacy in the main article): [...in fact, if these tools were only ever employed for learning purposes, then they may have proven some of the most important academic inventions ever. The argument I’m making is that digital technologies so often aren’t used for learning that giving students a laptop, tablet, or other multi-function device places a large (and unnecessary) obstacle between the student and the desired outcome.] Hence, I ask the author - Why call those "digital technologies (which) so often aren’t used for learning" as edTech when they aren't used for ed? Please study the author's Excuse #2 "Digital devices are ubiquitous" where he quickly shifts gears to saying "With that said, an argument could be made that schools should be teaching these ubiquitous subjects". Digital devices are not subjects. Computational Thinking, Information and Computer Technology, Computer Science, Digital Literacy - these are subjects. This sort of irrational conflation is why the common reader rushes to break open the champagne on EdTech has failed! A tool not employed solely for #education is not edTech. A lipstick is not educational, just because it exists in the highschooler's backpack. A piece of tech whose sole intention is to impart #learning alone should be called edTech and must be evaluated for efficacy when employed by trained, competent #teachers. I would love to see research on that (and they exist) rather than clickbait articles which conflate everything #digital as #edTech. If the article's title had been - "Indiscriminate access to tech has failed to revolutionise education" I would not be strapped to this BP monitoring machine.

Universities are at a crossroads. The traditional balanced higher education model of face-to-face teaching and research across a range of subjects is under threat from digitization, grant-funding concentration, global competition from a wider range of learning options, and changing student demands.   Ironically, universities have never been more necessary — both to foster the innovation required to solve complex and pressing global challenges like climate and sustainability, and to provide students of all ages with the lifelong learning skills they need to succeed in a world increasingly disrupted by AI.   As they look forward, universities will need to focus on their sense of purpose and add to their original missions of teaching and research to develop new funding streams that safeguard their futures. By 2050, for example, brain-computer interfaces will enable students to instantly absorb knowledge, and teachers will be able to adopt a more holistic approach toward students, focusing not just on imparting knowledge but paying greater attention to their health and well-being. This is the vision presented in the report “The End of Schooling as We Know It: Education in 2050,” produced by the online tutoring platform GoStudent, in collaboration with renowned professor and futurist Tracey Follows, named by *Forbes* among the Top 50 Female Futurists in the world. “With rapid technological advances, we are on the brink of a technological explosion that will change the way the entire world operates," explains Tracey Follows, futurist, author, and visiting professor of Digital Futures and Identity.
