THE ROOTS OF VETERINARY BURNOUT 1. We are perfectionists who are passionate about what we do. 2. Others above ourselves, no matter how we feel, no matter what. 3. Revenue over staff needs by employers with least amount of people. 4. Quantity over quality of care. 5. Frustration from negative client interactions, negative outcomes. 6. Fear of failing (more often than actual failure) The more we can work on solving these as an industry, the better chance of managing burnout as a profession.

Yes, stress comes with the veterinary territory. 😕 But it doesn’t mean accepting stressed-out as the norm. It’s within our power both to understand its causes and to learn how to manage – and even relieve – the stress in our everyday. 💜 Here are some quick tips to begin that process, but of course we know it’s not that simple. Every team member experiences stress differently, and every team works together differently to meet those challenges. 🧘♀️ Take the time, first and foremost, to BREATHE. And then begin to explore tangible ways to address any signs of burnout or compassion fatigue (or worse) among your staff. We created an eBook to help, and we hope you’ll share it with anyone who could benefit. Technology can feel like a necessary evil in the work that we do as veterinary care providers. From keeping medical records to maintaining our practice's online presence and communicating with clients and team members, technology has become increasingly ubiquitous over time. If you're feeling overwhelmed by tech, here are a few tips to help you disconnect from work: 1. Turn off notifications such as buzzing, beeping, vibration, or flashing lights. Pause before picking up your phone to consider if it's really important. 2. Turn your data off, use airplane mode, or turn off your phone altogether during periods of the day to prevent messages and notifications from coming through. 3. Try "batching" screen time rather than checking your phone, social media, or email repeatedly throughout the day. 4. Take a digital detox by allocating time during which you take a break from technology. If you can go on a walk and leave your phone at home, then do so! 5. Be intentional when using technology. If you find yourself in a fog and not actually focused on the screen, redirect your attention or purposefully switch to a different activity. Bonus Tip: Try enjoying your morning coffee, lunch break, or a few moments outside (without your phone, a podcast, or another screen) and see how it feels! ✨ This is an auspicious day for the veterinary profession.✨ For The Strand Vet this is a turning point in time where we, the little clinic with the BIG ❤️ , step onto the podium and prove bringing a proactive well-being program into a caring, highly pressurised, work environment can be accessible, achievable, measurable - but most importantly - contagious as the FUN is in the daily doing. https://lnkd.in/gkCp3Kjj The vet profession is dying, our people are dying, and the global ground-swell created by changemakers like Not One More Vet and Sophie's Legacy have proved this point in 2023. It is now or never….time to make the impossible into I am possible when it comes to acknowledging and preventing poor mental health....... We knew we needed to change as an industry - but it is now critical - we need to see change NOW. Why? 🌏 We are the people who sit at the epicenter of human and animal-kind, connected to nature and nurture - the conduit to the planet. 🌍 Our roles are incredibly diverse as a profession but belong to one concept….a concept that is hard to describe in most languages. ❤️ Aroha is a conceptual word which covers who we are.❤️ As carers our love, compassion, empathy, kindness, generosity, considerate and benevolent actions make us choose our industry …. but we can’t carry on our good work without our people. Our people who serve with aroha each, and every day. Our vetThrive Program, wrapped in the warm cloak of Te Whare Tapa Whā Māori health model, has sown the seeds of change in our organisation, a pilot spreading wisdom and change to our whanau and wider community in Aotearoa. It is our hope through organisations like ours, and yours, we come to recognise the value of creating, measuring, and doggedly implementing well-being programs, which are practical and accessible, continually enhanced by its people AND the well-being metrics become an integral part of a company’s value and future success in the not-too-distant future. Picture : Aroha atu, aroha mai - love received and love returned from my dear old lady Labrador Sydney #hrnzawards #mentalhealthmatters #workplacewellbeing #vetmedicine
