This week, we had the pleasure of hosting a study visit by #𝐒𝐲𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐣𝐢𝐞𝐞𝐬 𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 & 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐜 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐬 in collaboration with #𝐆𝐈𝐙, the German Agency for International Cooperation. Together, we explored 𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞-𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬 to inclusion, focusing on employment, vocational training, skills development, and cultural participation for People of Determination (PoD).⁣ ⁣ At FIA - Access for All, we like taking 𝐚 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐫𝐮𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡—so instead of traditional presentations, we engaged in project-focused workshops and hands-on explorations, showcasing a fresh angle on the UAE's landscape. We shared our practical solutions and strategies to make inclusion 𝐚 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 across sectors. From #VocationalTraining models to enhancing #cultural access, this visit was about moving beyond theory to action.⁣ ⁣ What made this experience even sweeter? We kicked off our sessions with fresh #dates from Mina Market—a small gesture that helped set the tone for open and collaborative discussions. Great to catch up with an old friend and UAE 🇦🇪 veteran Nick Cochrane-Dyet MBE during his visit to Singapore 🇸🇬 I know Nick from my time in Abu Dhabi. He is a long term resident (30+ years!) and legend, and his knowledge and insights are fascinating. Seeing Nick was a chance to: 🔸Reflect on developments in the UAE and the wider Gulf region (I can’t explain it, but i love this part of the world). 🔸Exchange insights on the deepening ties between the Gulf and Singapore/Southeast Asia. 🔸Discuss opportunities to strengthen UK-Gulf-Asia business links, particularly in the green economy and maritime sectors. 🔸Recognise Nick’s valuable role as Chair of the British Chamber of Commerce Abu Dhabi. 🔸And, on a personal note, simply reconnect with a familiar face – even after (just) two years living in Singapore (when do you stop being “new” here?!). As of 2024, the Chinese expatriate population continues to grow, estimated at 400,000 as of 2023, contributing to various sectors and enhancing the socio-economic landscape of the UAE. Economic Contributions Chinese businesses are thriving in the UAE, with sectors like trade, construction, technology, and hospitality seeing significant Chinese investment. The Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) and other business hubs have witnessed an influx of Chinese companies, fostering stronger economic ties between the UAE and China. Cultural Influence Cultural exchange is a hallmark of the Chinese presence in the UAE. The Chinese New Year is celebrated with great enthusiasm, featuring dragon dances, lantern festivals, and traditional cuisine. Educational institutions and cultural centers are also promoting Chinese language and culture, creating a bridge between the communities. Education and Innovation Chinese students are enrolling in UAE universities in increasing numbers, contributing to the academic and research landscape. Collaborations between Emirati and Chinese universities are paving the way for innovative research and development, particularly in technology and engineering fields. Future Prospects The UAE and China are continuously strengthening their bilateral relations through strategic partnerships and agreements. The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is a prime example, positioning the UAE as a crucial node in this global economic corridor. This initiative is expected to bring even more Chinese businesses and professionals to the UAE, further enhancing the cultural and economic fabric of the country. The growing wave of research innovation in the Arab world is truly exciting. The region is experiencing a dynamic shift as it ramps up its research initiatives. For years, progress has been held back by limited resources and scattered efforts. But to fully realize its potential, the Arab world must make some changes. It’s time to overcome these barriers and focus on institutions that lead in research, share knowledge, and work together on significant projects. Building a strong and collaborative research environment will help foster innovation and address key challenges. The Arab world has the opportunity to become a leader in global research, but this requires a concerted effort from all stakeholders.
