While the classic approach of utilizing free public spaces such as parks and beaches can alleviate some costs, it's the innovative methods that are really changing the game for indie filmmakers. Crowdsourcing platforms like LocationHub are bridging the gap between filmmakers and property owners, offering access to unique locations without breaking the bank. Moreover, virtual scouting tools such as Google Street View and Matterport allow filmmakers to explore locations remotely, saving significant time and resources. Yet, the path is not without its hurdles. Limited resources and complex legal considerations around location agreements pose significant challenges. By leveraging community support, embracing technological innovations, and navigating legal landscapes wisely, indie filmmakers can turn these challenges into opportunities, creating memorable settings for their stories even on a tight budget. Welcome to my first Filmmaker Friday about a company and, timed to Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, it’s Tubi!  Next week, one of Tubi’s most anticipated Cannes events will be an evening celebrating the launch of Stubios, a fan-fueled studio for aspiring filmmakers and their fans. In addition to welcoming creatives from varied backgrounds into Hollywood, Stubios puts the power to greenlight content in the hands of the viewer/fans. The #Tribeca Festival is underway, and you'll soon be able to celebrate the first ever "De Niro Con." De Niro Is An Icon: An Exhibit & Immersive Film is open June 6-16. A career-spanning exhibit celebrating 80 years of #RobertDeNiro with over 300 items primarily sourced from his personal archive including rare images and video, annotated scripts, costumes, research materials, and storyboards. Plus, a first-of-its-kind short film De Niro, New York produced by Little Cinema and showcased within the #Hexadome, a cutting-edge structure and format crafted by Berlin's Institute for Sound and Music. Special screenings of De Niro’s films will also take place next weekend (June 14-16), with appearances from Hollywood stars including #MartinScorsese, #BillyCrystal, #WhoopiGoldberg, #ChristopherWalken, #JohnTurturro and #QuentinTarantino. The “Goodfellas” star launched the film festival in 2002, along with #JaneRosenthal and #CraigHatkoff, in an effort to revitalize a post-9/11 #NewYorkCity. The showcase has since evolved into a major cultural affair in the city. One of the festival’s priorities this year was broadening its storytelling scope, festival director and VP of programming, Cara Cusumano, told CBS News. “That’s been kind of our guiding light and the root of where all these other programs evolved from. Where is the most interesting storytelling happening? How are audiences today consuming stories? Increasingly it’s not always a 90-minute feature film experience,” she added. Investors are pouring billions of dollars 💸 into the African creative economy. Here are 7 funding opportunities for creators and founders. 👇🏾 1. African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) African Film Fund - A $1 BILLION fund to co-finance film projects with large studios and invest in African filmmakers, producers, and directors. 2. Pan-African CCI Fund 1 by PanAfrican Capital Holdings Limited - A $100 million fund for financing film production and distribution across Africa. 3. Sony Innovation Fund: Africa - A $10 million fund for seed to early-stage start-ups in the African entertainment industry. 4. Africa Music Fund (AMF) - A $20 million fund set up by Oluwatosin “ Mr Eazi ” Ajibade and led by 88mph.ac to invest in Africa’s next music stars. 5. VEMA Fund by Vizient Coop and Opportunik Global Fund - A $20 million fund investing in African entertainment, media, and art. 6. Labari Africa Productions - A production studio backed by a $3 million fund to support the production, distribution, and marketing of multiple Nollywood films. 7. Capital Film Productions - A ₦500 million fund set up to invest in Nigerian and African movies after previous successes with “Gangs of Lagos” and “Brotherhood”. It’s exciting to see this level of investor confidence in the African creative economy. However, it’s not surprising. According to African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), Africa is projected to produce up to 10% of global creative goods exports worth roughly $200 billion (or 4% of Africa’s GDP) by 2030. The African film and audiovisual industry is also expected to create over 20 million jobs and generate $20 billion in annual revenues. A 2021 study by The World Bank revealed that revenues from digital music streaming in Africa will reach $500 million in 2025, up 5x from $100 million in 2017. Sub-Saharan Africa is the fastest-growing region in the world. 🚀 Meanwhile, Egypt 🇪🇬 and Nigeria 🇳🇬 were expected to collectively generate $2.5 billion in revenue from the fashion industry by the end of 2023. The list goes on. I spend 99% of my time thinking about how to connect African capital to African content, culture, and commerce.
