How to Conquer the 'Second Verse Curse' Are you struggling with finishing songs...especially when it comes to second verses? Verses show the detail of a story. They set the scene and establish the characters and situation. If we, as the writer, continue to emphasize how problematic the problem is, the song doesn't grow. We feel this when we're facing the second verse. Here's what you can do: 1. Change the vantage point Is the singer in the midst of the problem right now? Or is the singer looking back in the past? To make this strategy work, it's important to limit each verse to a single timeframe. 2. Expand on the Chorus Message The chorus is where we deliver the 'why' of the song. If the chorus states the truth, the verses show us a specific example of that truth. 3. Flip the Coin Try what I call 'flipping the coin': make the opposite of the problem in the first verse the solution within the second. Your second verse could be about what it would be like to see the fractured relationship healed, or describing the good times when the relationship was flourishing. Second verses don't have to be the death of our songs. Just a few minutes reviewing the function of our verses against our choruses and considering their vantage points can easily drive them across the finish line. 1, 2 or 3 - which one of those tools will you try next in your songwriting?
