Do you ever wonder why a seemingly “non-significant” event happens you take it so hard? According to the AIP theory, which EMDR therapy is based on, this is because our past experiences color our present experiences. The goal of EMDR is to connect helpful and true information in our brain to our memories of not so good experiences. The result is the painful experience in our past is not forgotten, but instead placed within our story. #AIP #EMDR #therapy

👇🏼 So much to like in this comprehensive account of EMDR. 💡 I particularly like Dr Justin Havens EMDR Consultant use of accessible language. 🖊 Dr Havens writes about how EMDR can transform our relationship with the symptoms of trauma, particularly if we are constantly reminded of a traumatic experience or event. 👩🏼⚕️ As an integrative therapist, not all of my clients approach me specifically for EMDR therapy. 🧠 This means that not all clients present with traumatic memories. 👤 For example, recently, I have helped a client with a phobia. ⁉ This phobia had no links to any related traumatic experience. 🖇 The link is a fear of helplessness. This fear links to a childhood bereavement. Dr Havens adds that the manifestation of trauma shows up in a number of mental health difficulties including: ➡ depression ➡ anxiety ➡ addiction ➡ behavioural issues ➡ relationships challenges 🔎 The link to trauma is not always obvious. 👥 It's up to the therapist to sit alongside the client and understand their personal journey. 🧠 EMDR is about facilitating a space to let our brains adaptively process. ✨ As someone who has experience of EMDR both as client and practitioner, there really is something life changing about how this happens. 🎤 I spoke at the BACP conference earlier in the year about how I incorporate EMDR into my coaching practice. I help clients: ➡ prepare for promotion ➡ overcome public speaking nerves ➡ prepare for pitches ➡ prepare for interviews ➡ overcome writers block #emdr BACP #therapy #therapist #coach #growth #change #traumainformedpractice

A good explanation of the impact of EMDR therapy.
"Trauma is stored in the brain in fragmented form; it needs to be integrated to become a memory of something that happened, not something that is happening." Before training in EMDR, Rebekah wrestled with how to help clients reconcile what they knew with how they felt. After EMDR training she is able to help clients move towards not only believing what is true, but also "feeling it in their gut."
