Day 2: Acupuncture is NOT:A scary or painful experience Many pet owners worry about their pet being a ‘pin-cushion’ or say ‘they’d never sit still enough for acupuncture’. Having undergone certified Dog-Friendly Vet training and having experience in working in gold-standard Cat-Friendly veterinary clinics, I am acutely aware of making the treatment experience as stress-free as possible. This is done by the following: -Treating pets in their own homes can immediately make a difference to animals who find travelling or the clinic environment a worrying place. -I schedule hour-long visits to examine your pet, giving them plenty of time to get used to me, going slowly and giving them rest breaks if their body language indicates they are unhappy at any point. -We can use plenty of treats or the genius lickmats to distract your pet and give them positive associations with my visits. Frank the whippet is a quivering wreck at the vet clinic which causes his owner distress as she is trying to keep him calm while relaying or gathering information from the vet and helping him through an examination or treatment. At his home he gives me a quick sniff then hops on the couch for his ‘therapy’ - yes he needs a few treats to distract him while I insert the needles but then he quickly nods off as the acupuncture releases relaxing endorphins into his bloodstream. 😴 #dogacupuncture #whippet #canineanxiety #fearfree #dogfriendlyvet

📃 Blood Collection from Coccygeal (Tail) vein in cattle 🐄 💥 Coccygeal venepuncture in Cattle 🐄 📃 Indications: 💉 Collection of venous samples (volume up to 10 ml) with minimal restraint and little or no assistance. Obvious advantages over collection from jugular or subcutaneous abdominal (milk) vein (latter not recommended). Minimal risk of infection and sporadic haematoma formation is insignificant, so tail paralysis is virtually unknown. 📃 Technique: Collect into evacuated blood collection tubes containing edetic acid (EDTA), heparin etc., or without coagulant via 0.9 metric 4 cm needle which is screwed into the plastic holder into which the collection tube is inserted. Alternatively collect via 0.8 metric 2 cm needle into a polypropylene syringe (5-10 ml) with negative pressure. • Restrain head in stall by chain or halter, or in squeeze chute or head gate (manual restraint rarely required) • Grasp tail in middle third and slowly elevate to almost vertical position ('tail jack' Figure above) Want to cleanse the tail site of gross faecal contamination with paper towel or cotton wool • With free hand locate palpable vein in midline, just caudal to insertion of skin folds of tail at level of coccygeal (Co) vertebrae 6-7 • Insert needle just cranial to bony protuberance of haemal process in mid- line to depth of about 8-12 mm (in Vacutainer® system, insert needle into tube), and withdraw slightly until blood flow starts • If initially unsuccessful, reduce the tension of the tail slightly and continue at some site, otherwise attempt at Co 5-6 ⚠️Do not massage puncture site after venepuncture. 📌 Complication: Insignificant haematoma develops in a small number of cases, but dis- appears in a few days. Procedure does not cause thrombophlebitis or total occlusion of veins.
