Dr. Laura Gilbert CBE’s Post

Director of Data Science, Director of the Incubator for AI at 10 Downing St, Chief Analyst at Cabinet Office, Visiting Professor in Practice at LSE

With a mix of sadness and excitement I announce that I’m leaving the civil service at the end of the month, taking up a new role as the Head of AI for Government with the Ellison Institute. I will also be working closely with the Tony Blair Institute as part of the role. I look back on my four-and-a-quarter years in Downing Street with huge pride – I’ve had the immense privilege of working with the people I consider to be the absolute very best in international government. I’ve built up two teams of solid gold superstars, all individuals with whom I remain entirely in awe – the No10 Data Science team (10DS) and the incubator for Artificial Intelligence (i.AI). High performing, aspirational, determined, dedicated team players all. I have also had the privilege to oversee for a time the wonderful and aspirational Evaluation Taskforce, just 14 people who have transformed the way government spends money. I will deeply miss all these people from whom I’m learned so much. There are many, many people both inside these teams and out who have inspired me and who I would like to thank, but I’m afraid of missing someone out. Hopefully you know who you are and how highly I esteem you. Details on the management of the Incubator through he digital government transformation are currently being finalised but we expect some exciting news shortly – watch this space!

What a loss for No.10. But Ellison Institute will be a great place for you to push the frontiers of what's possible. Such an exciting role. If you want to think about the human interface (how people use AI; whether people trust AI; how AI can personalise govt services without inequity), do bring BIT into the conversation!
