This is an important piece by Habiba Katsha "When you look at the state of the industry, it’s hard to imagine a future within it. The golden era of journalism has long gone and many are choosing to make an escape plan—especially Black women, including myself. While R29 Unbothered remains as one of the few platforms that commission and amplify Black writers both in the US and UK, journalism is still a very, white, middle-class industry with Black journalists only making up 0.2% of the overall workforce." #MediaRelations #Journalism Refinery29

Unless political literacy improves, not just in the U.S., but worldwide, we are destined to continue down the road of divisiveness, a road paved with the death of independent journalism, the death of fairness and equality, bodies of political dissidents, and the corpse of Democracy itself. One of the reasons 40% of the U.S. electorate seems unreasonable to the other 60% is that independent journalism is dying a slow death, caught between a public that doesn’t want to pay for news from reputable sources and corporate greed, losing the “loudness” battle with social media and vile political candidates that appeal to the lowest common denominator, eager to tear down the norms and guardrails of Democracy in an effort to have the fringes rule the majority.
The worst threats to journalism come from politicians. The best defence against them is serving the public

In this final installment, three women journalists delve into the significance of taking ownership of one's narrative and identity amidst a media landscape that is facing challenges in modern journalism. They explore ideas such as inclusivity, bias, and objectivity. The takeaway? Newsrooms need to go beyond surface-level representation; they must actively work towards providing equal access to positions of power and commit to dismantling colonial influences within journalism.

'...striving for fairness, accuracy, comprehensiveness, balance, neutrality and detachment... the great myth of Western journalism.' Let's be fair and add incompetence, laziness, cowardice and racism too, deeply institutionalized, obviously with some powerful exceptions (none of which are very evident in commercial or public media in this country). I am reminded of reading Gitlin's The Whole World is Watching and Chomsky's concept of the 'propaganda model' many years ago. Once suspects journalism students do not read such texts nowadays in their training. https://lnkd.in/g8E5bVr7.

🗞️ Journalism's Ongoing Quest for Neutrality Amid Ideological Turbulence Decades after World War II, the questions of journalistic neutrality and truth-telling remain as relevant and contentious as ever. Penelope Fitzgerald's experiences at the BBC during the war, as depicted in her novel "Human Voices," offer a reflection on these themes. The historical dilemmas faced by journalists, who strived to broadcast honest wartime reports amidst chaos, mirror the contemporary media landscape's struggles. The ethical quandaries and struggles with objectivity that persist in journalism today are highlighted by instances such as Tucker Carlson's interview with Vladimir Putin. These are brought into sharper focus when considering journalists who’ve faced dire consequences in the pursuit of truth. The nobility of journalism lies in the continuous effort to relay human voices with integrity, even as the lines between truth and propaganda become increasingly blurred. #Journalism #MediaEthics #HistoricalReflection #ContemporaryChallenges #TruthInReporting Sources: https://lnkd.in/gYHyx3zM

Exploring the Pulse of Political Journalism 🌍🖋️ Political journalism isn't just about reporting; it's about crafting narratives that shape public perception, fostering a space for debate, and holding power accountable. Each piece of political news we create is an intersection of thorough research, objective analysis, and an understanding of the broader geopolitical landscape. In today’s rapidly evolving media landscape, the role of political journalists is crucial. We navigate a fine line between uncovering the truth and presenting it responsibly, especially when dealing with issues of national interest and international diplomacy. From analyzing policy changes to covering sensitive diplomatic events, we strive to inform and engage the public with transparency and integrity. As political journalists, we have a responsibility to question, analyze, and provide context. With every article, we’re not just sharing facts but also contributing to a more informed society. The dedication to research, balance, and accuracy is essential in each story we share, as it shapes perspectives, influences decisions, and ultimately, impacts lives. #PoliticalJournalism #MediaEthics #TruthInMedia #PublicDebate #GlobalAffairs #JournalismMatters
