Dr Graham Jones’ Post

Burns First Aid Giving immediate first aid can help to decrease the severity of a burn Thank you to our colleagues at Surgeons for Little Lives for their educational video! 1. Don't cover the burn with ointment butter milk or home remedies as they can make the burn worse 2. Do not tear off any clothing stuck to a burn but remove clothing around burn. Keep the child warm e.g. in a blanket while treating the burn. 3. Run cool tap water over the burn for 20 minutes (if no tap, use a bucket or jug). Do not use ice or iced water. 4. If a blister forms, do not break it open. 5.Dry sterile gauze or Burnshield® dressing may be applied to protect the burnt area once it has been cooled whilst seeking help 6. Make your way to the paediatrician or hospital for any burns that blister, burns on sensitive areas of the body (hand, feet, face, eye, groin) or those that cover an area larger than the child’s hand should always be attended to by immediately.
