Unapologetically Dr. Shawntay Harris Last week, I had the privilege of attending a conference alongside some of the brightest and most accomplished minds in nursing. The atmosphere was filled with accolades and distinguished credentials, but amid all the expertise, I noticed a concerning theme that echoed throughout my conversations: a significant gap in business and financial acumen. Many attendees had CVs that went on for pages showcasing their education, research, and service. Yet, these achievements, earned at prestigious institutions and major organizations, often came at the cost of broader business knowledge. Even more unsettling was hearing from consultants who, while experts in their fields, were undervaluing their worth by quoting shockingly low rates for their services. It was heartbreaking to witness this lack of business “sense,” especially in a room with the cream of the profession. It’s a stark reminder that while nursing education equips us with "a particular set of skills", there is an undeniable need for training in business, finance, and entrepreneurship. We must shift the narrative and equip ourselves to value our work in all dimensions. Nurses deserve to be empowered not only as educators, executives, researchers, and clinicians but also as business leaders who understand and command the true value of their contributions. Let’s invest in ourselves and elevate the profession by embracing a well-rounded skill set that includes business acumen. It’s time to recognize our worth and advocate for it boldly.

What Matters To Me Today, I will be speaking to 1st Year Nursing students at Cardiff University who are about to embark on their first placement. They would have the opportunity to put what they've learnt so far into practice. At the centre of their work are the patients they would meet and care for. These are people who are more than their medical conditions or whatever perceived notions healthcare professionals might have about them. No matter their status outside of the clinical setting, coming into these spaces makes them vulnerable. I should know. I am one of them. It sounds lofty to talk about co-production with patients when it comes to shaping healthcare services but it rarely translates into practice. One of the most rewarding things I do is to be that voice for those who can't speak for themselves. Dear medical professional, no matter how vast your professional knowledge, you can never be an authority on your patient's lived experience. Don't make assumptions or jump to conclusions before you ask what they want and what matters to them. Remember that you are in a powerful position compared to the people you care for. Don't subject them to only monologues without giving them the opportunity to assimilate and respond to what you have said. Engage "respectful curiosity" when appropriate. As much as it depends on you, respect their dignity as human beings. It's understandable that you have time and resource constraints as medical professionals but don't let that get in the way of treating people as you would like your loved ones to be treated. Kindness, patience and courtesy go a long way. Most definitely, that goes both ways. To all the medical professionals who are already putting patient-centred care at the heart of clinical practice, mega thanks. As a patient, I truly appreciate you. 𝗙𝗥𝗢𝗠 𝗦𝗖𝗥𝗨𝗕𝗦 𝗧𝗢 𝗦𝗖𝗥𝗜𝗕𝗕𝗟𝗘𝗦: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝘆 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗹𝘆 𝘂𝗻𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹𝘀 Yesterday marked the grand finale of my eight weeks clinical posting—an experience that was supposed to be a breezy four weeks but morphed into a full fledged eight weeks saga. Think of it as a sequel nobody asked for but everyone ended up loving. It’s like when you order a small sized coffee and end up with a giant cup—unexpected, a bit overwhelming, but ultimately invigorating. These past eight weeks have been a blend of unforgettable experiences and others I’ll happily wave goodbye to. First; the highlights: 📌the patients who became my greatest teachers, teaching me the importance of facial expression—how far a smile can go 📌showing me that healing is as much about empathy as it is about medicine. 📌I’ll miss the joy and satisfaction in a patients’ eyes after attending to them warmly or the simple act of holding someone’s hands during a tough moment—those are memories I’ll carry with me. I’ll also miss the adrenaline rush of those chaotic moments in the ward. I’ll miss the camaraderie with my fellow nursing students,our whispered jokes and shared glances that spoke volumes during those seemingly endless shifts. Now,onto the things that make me say “good riddance!” —starting with the scary superiors. Their steely glances and booming voices could curdle milk (it is usually that bad😂). But let’s give credit where it’s due- they sure kept us on our toes. I’m convinced they practice their intimidating stares in front of a mirror every morning. As I step away from the clinical chaos, it’s time to sharpen my pencils ( or rather, my brain😶) because lectures are about to kick off. I’ve been warned that this next chapter will require me to be extra “on my toes”. The thought of diving back into textbooks and lectures may not be the most exciting prospect, but I know that staying sharp and attentive will make it just fine. In conclusion, my 8 weeks clinical posting may have been a wild ride but it has left me with memories, experiences and a new found appreciation for the nursing profession. #studentnursesonlinkedIn #nursesonlinkedIn

My journey with the Johnson & Johnson Nurse Innovation Fellowship Last summer, Marion Leary, PhD, MPH, RN - my former professional and mentor - invited me to speak about my journey as a nurse innovator and entrepreneur at the Johnson & Johnson Nurse Innovation Fellowship Kick off session. The Nurse Innovation Fellowship, powered by my alma mater, University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, and the Wharton School is a a year-long, team-based nursing fellowship that brings together two nursing leaders (a CNO and a senior nurse leader) from 10 different U.S. Health Systems. The program educates nurse leaders on human-centered design, supports them in driving transformative change within their healthcare systems, and offers core courses in change management, business, and leadership. I kicked off the 2023 fellowship program as the keynote speaker, sharing the story of how M7 was born and the goals my team and I had for the year. At that point, M7’s “MVP” (minimum viable product) was being developed and Eric Gruskin and I were still in the process of convincing at least one hospital to give M7 a chance. I promised the J&J Nurse Innovation Fellows that I would report out on my team’s progress at the end of the year. We have come full circle. The conclusion of the 2023 program is coming up next week. During that event, I am excited to share with the fellows how far M7 has come: ⭐ How the product has evolve ⭐ The impact we’ve had on our early customers (we now have several!) ⭐ My learnings about what CNOs and nurse leaders can do to promote innovation. As part of the program, each team applied what they had learned to a real innovation project in their health systems.
