Many years ago, while researching for my doctoral dissertation I "discovered" INFORMS (informs.org), a fantastic organization full of resources and information for those passionate about operations, systems, analytics, and magement sciences. How do you say in academic: "I don't know"? People suggested the following answers: The data available is inconclusive, leaving room for future exploration in this area. "It's widely known that..." Further research should answer this question It remains an empirical question… That’s beyond the scope … I can find out. Further research should answer the question "to the best of my knowledge" *proceeds by telling the most basic knowledge* “it is so obvious that it is left as an exercise”. Let’s find out together It's beyond the scope of this research I need to research a little more, on the nuances. I am not an expert in that field / I am not a mathematician That was exactly my questioning as of now I am using a different definition of X concept And my favourite: What is your guess? We are still running our pilot phase "There is much debate on the issue." I believe that I unfortunately don’t have a very deep knowledge on this issue, but it interested me a lot. I will learn more about it and will share my findings with you. The issue is quite complex, and there are different ways of looking at it. First of all… (Keep going until others lose interest and find something else to do.) “I am not at liberty to say” "What a great question. You should read my paper on..." I’ll tell you when you fund me. I must admit that my current understanding of this field is neither fully comprehensive nor up-to-date with the latest developments. I would appreciate the opportunity to revisit this discussion after I have further deepened my knowledge and grasp of the subject matter.

Conjunctive Query evaluation lies at the core of any modern database management system. This course will cover the use of information theory to answer some fundamental questions in query processing. How large can the output to a query be? How efficiently can we evaluate a query? Is one query always faster than another? These questions can be answered using a fascinating tool: entropic vectors and information inequalities. The lectures contain a gentle introduction to conjunctive queries, then to entropic inequalities, and finally describe their applications to query evaluation.
