My feed is full of posts about tips on starting your training contract as it is that time of year (Jon Gregson and Sophie Wardell are full of great tips). It got me thinking, I wondered if I missed out by not doing one? What if at 18 (or older) you don't know what you want to do, or don't want to go to Uni when all your friends are? What if you don't have a career plan or feel it is going a bit squiggly? Almost 17 years ago to the week (I delayed my start to get married 🤭) I started a 6 month temporary contract at Weightmans . I renewed it every 6 months. For 5 years. I didn't know what I wanted to do. I was gutted I couldn't get a pupillage and become a barrister as I had planned. After 4 years of getting to the final 2 on multiple occasions I let that dream go, sat the accounts and conduct exam (I am that old 😂) and did 3 months in a non contentious seat and there I was, a qualified solicitor with no LPC or Training Contract to my name. There was no career plan. Instead, I took every opportunity I was offered at Weightmans and had and continue to have the support of many great mentors. I squiggled my way around the organisation and now find myself in a role that didn't exist when I started. It has all worked out in the end, as inevitably it does. A new connection on LinkedIn messaged yesterday describing my career as 'a career that can best be read backwards rather than planned forward' and he hit the nail right on the head. Over the next couple of weeks, we've got open days in many of our offices for year 12 + students so they can find out about our solicitor degree apprenticeship and paralegal apprenticeships (which looking back are striking similar to my route to qualification, with exams as I worked and a portfolio to complete which I wouldn't change for the 🌎). Come along and meet us, you never know where it may lead....#SeeThePossibility #apprentices #careersinlaw #Solicitor #oshapedlawyer https://lnkd.in/eS3hvXeR
Thank you for the shout out Dr Catriona Wolfenden and your wise words, there are so many people following squiggly careers. It really is okay not to have a plan and to trust your instincts and say "yes" to opportunities as they arise. I have no doubt Weightmans will offer a great experience to these students.
Life is lived forward, yet explained backwards. I think very few people have a real career strategy – just a series of next steps that seem to make sense in retrospect. When I was 16 I wanted to be history teacher :-).
'a career that can best be read backwards rather than planned forward' what a superb observation, I love that.
Thanks for sharing, it’s great to show the standard routes aren’t the only way and Happy Birthday 🎂
Please don’t follow my advice. Follow Cat’s words - much more wise and relevant for anyone looking to start their legal careers
