I've been working on a #campaign about the #EUElections for a client, which has prompted me to consolidate what I've been reading + listening to in a blog (so you don't have to 😉 ). Main points here ⬇ ⬇ : 💥Although hard to predict, EU politicians and policymakers are bracing for a swing towards the right. 💥Whilst the EU Parliament has been ruled by a de facto grand coalition, this equilibrium can change if the ECR and ID gain seats. 💥The incumbent EU Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen will have to negotiate a deal with the right and far-right MEPs and/or the far-left MEPs to secure a second mandate. 💥A change in the EU Parliament will have far-reaching political and policy implications. 💥 Only when the new Commission is in place, we will know for sure which policies the EU will decide to prioritise. #EUelections #GreenDeal #EUCommission

The huge win by rightwing parties in the European Parliament elections should come as no suprise. For too long the establishment center-left and center-right parties and their Brussels bureaucrat accomplices had completely ignored the views and opinions of average citizens on centralizing power in the EU, opening the door to uncontrolled immigration, imposing punitive measures against farmers, and pursuing an alarmist 'net-zero' approach to climate change. Again, all of these policies, all which would impose significant changes in people's lives, were hubristically adopted wtih minimal or no consultation under the mantra that the Euroepan elite knows best. Yesterday's results of strengthening the power of hard right parties in Europe were as unnecessary as they were predictable. Ignore the people at your peril. https://lnkd.in/erBBqwgF

The polls have opened for the #EuropeanParliament elections in the Netherlands and Estonia, and we can expect the Dutch exit polls late on Thursday night to provide us with our first insight into the political mood among EU voters. This parliament will be elected to serve through 2029 and which will see the #EU focus on a number of important issues from security and defence to resilience and competitiveness, from energy and climate change to migration and EU enlargement. For businesses this creates an evolving political and policy landscape that they can, and should, be taking steps to prepare for. https://lnkd.in/eKtfWW_Z

📢 EU Election Results: Key Takeaways The EU election results are in, and here are the key highlights: 🔹 European People's Party (EPP) emerged as the clear winner. 🔹 The right achieved expected results but fell short of a majority - with far right parties gaining seats: - European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) gained 4 seats (total: 73). - Identity and Democracy (ID) increased by 9 seats (total: 58). 🔹 Socialists & Democrats (S&D) retained 139 seats. 🔹 Greens faced a setback, losing 18 seats, but performed well in Denmark, Sweden, and Lithuania. 🔹 Renew Europe (liberal party) did not fare well, losing 20 seats. 🔹 The Left lost 1 seat (total: 36). 🔹 The center coalition (S&D, EPP, and Renew) remains consolidated but weaker. 🔹 The European Parliament is set to vote for the President of the Commission, proposed by the Council, on July 18th. 🔹 The Council is expected to propose Ursula von der Leyen (EPP) for a second term as President of the Commission. 🔹 Von der Leyen could potentially form a commission with S&D, EPP, and Renew, if she were to receive 361 votes in parliament, continuing the current coalition. 🔹 S&D and Renew have ruled out working with ECR, while the Greens might join von der Leyen’s coalition. If you want to know in a nutshell what is the overall result of the EU elections, read the summary below by Alberto Alemanno. While newspaper headlines seem quite scary mentioning victories of fair-right parties in many countries and Macron's decision to call for anticipated elections, it is not a stark victory. On the contrary, the new majority in the EU Parliament won't be "permanent" but will have to be "flexible" and discuss alliances on a case-by-case basis depending on the topic. This is good news for civil society and activists like ARTICLE 19 as we're planning to push new #EUParliament and #EUCommission to lead on bold reforms on #transparency and #accesstoinformation supporting a cultural shift from secrecy towards open and transparency with a view of having more accountable and trusted institutions. #elezionieuropee #EuropeanElections #EP2024
Contrary to expectations, these EU elections have NOT given the EU away to the far-right. While these far-right, anti-establishment parties secured approximately 25% of the seats, they won’t be able to unite and call the shots. Instead, the pro-EU majority - which has historically been running the EU over the past 50 years - holds. As such, it should be able to form a parliamentary majority supporting the next EU Commission and identify a clear set of political priorities for the next five years. The question remains whether and the extent to which this conventional pro-EU majority will accept to receive the support of additional groups, be on the left (such as the Greens which has been resized) or the right, with Giorgia Meloni’s Brothers of Italy & co. This might be needed not only to elect the next EU Commission President but also to pass any legislation proposed by the next EU Commission. We could therefore expect the emergence not of a 'permanent' political majority, but one characterised by variable geometry to be formed on a case-by-case basis depending on the files being presented by the EU Commission to the EU Parliament. While not a new phenomenon (that’s how the EU constitutional setting works), this time it’ll be qualitatively and quantitatively different than before. Now that the final European Parliament plenary week has wrapped up, stock-taking time has started. What were the achievements, milestones, but also missed opportunities for the European Parliament? My take on the migration portfolio: Considering the lack of any legislative change for years, the New Pact could be considered a step forward. However, we need to consider that the political landscape has over this time become only more fragmented. For this reason, many MEPs are dissatisfied with the Pact. However, as I told Deutsche Welle, “The reason why MEPs ultimately greenlit it is the simple calculus that it's still better to have the Pact that not. Not passing the reforms would have likely led to a blow in the elections, and centrist and center-left parties would not have wanted to suffer the consequences.”https://lnkd.in/dcu4ehi7
