Well-packaged and researched report on Malaysia CVC ecosystem and outlook by Hanno, Nurlin Mohd and team at BCG and the local regulator (Capital Markets Malaysia) with feedback from Siti, Annie, Evan, Matthijs (Matt), Yi Chung, K T, https://lnkd.in/e42iC98A Only 8% of local corporations have an active CVC unit - H/T Petronas and Sunway - but nearly 40% are likely or very likely to do so. The crucial step is convincing the families that still run the corporations about the need. In most of the world, the separation between family office and corporate balance sheets to back startups is less clear cut and debt in a high interest rate environment is more appealing than 'risky' entrepreneurs. Singapore dominates the VC ecosystem in the south-east, accounting for 58% of total deal volume and 68% of deal value ($4.05 billion across 369 deals in the nine months ending September). https://lnkd.in/eaHZKJzg GCV is looking to return to the region to understand more of the south-east Asia ecosystem next year so advice and thoughts welcome www.globalventuring.com

Private capital is an important driver of Asia’s growth story, and the Singapore asset management industry stands at the heart of Asia to orchestrate capital flows to support environment, economic and social good. I was delighted to attend SuperReturn Asia 2024. With over 3,000 senior attendees from more than 50 countries, it is Asia’s leading private equity and venture capital conference, bringing together GPs and LPs from around the world to discuss investment trends and opportunities, renew existing business networks and build new ones. At the conference, I highlighted opportunities to mobilise private capital to: (i) support the growth of enterprises in Asia, (ii) meet Asia’s green and transition finance needs, and (iii) drive the growth of Asia’s digital economy. This way, private capital can be productive, purposeful and progressive. Singapore is an attractive asset management hub that intermediates global capital flows and investment opportunities in the region. We will continue to enhance our thriving private markets ecosystem of global fund managers and broad investor base to support the region’s development. 🌐 Reimagining Thai VC/PE: Beyond Control, Towards Global Excellence As I work with a group of Thai general partners designing an offshore fund, we're confronting a critical governance crossroads. The proposed framework suggests investments up to 5% of fund size could be approved solely by key GPs—a approach that risks transforming our potential world-class fund into a controlled, limited vehicle. The Governance Dilemma Control vs. Collaboration: Are we building a fund or an estate? What's at Stake - Investor Confidence: International LPs seek transparent, robust governance - Strategic Agility: Rigid control mechanisms stifle innovation - Ecosystem Development: We're not just creating a fund, but advancing Thailand's venture capital maturity Proposed Provocation Critical Questions for Our Ecosystem -Does limiting IC oversight demonstrate sophistication or insecurity? -How do we balance rapid decision-making with robust governance? -Can we design a framework that attracts global institutional capital? Provocative Insight: True leadership isn't about control—it's about creating transparent, collaborative mechanisms that inspire confidence. 💡 Community Challenge: Help us architect a governance model that positions Thailand as a global venture capital innovator. #VentureCapital #ThaiInnovation #GlobalStandardsThoughts? Let's redefine our ecosystem's potential. 👇

STV remained the largest VC investor in Saudi technology companies throughout 2023 as we continue to double down on emerging winners of our portfolio. Several positive trends observed in our portfolio underscore the potential of the MENA ecosystem: 🔹Numerous companies grew their revenues to more than $150M compared to $10-15M at the time of our investment 🔹 Several companies have achieved attractive profitability while others are on a promising trajectory 🔹M&A is an important lever for company to scale and expand their value proposition 🔹 The GCC market offers sufficient depth for companies to achieve substantial scale in certain sectors 🔹IPO is more and more a viable exit venue as tech companies performance and potential become attractive and public market investors show strong appetite
