Amazon attempts at physical retail have been largely unsuccessful- so now what? More Same Day Delivery to compete with the convenience of brick and mortar. Seemingly intuitive and great for consumers but I don’t think it’ll work out that way. More same day means more micro FCs more cars, more trips, less aggregating of orders. Closing that gap is going to be a big endeavor. Who will foot that bill? It will start with the companies selling on Amazon and trickle to the consumer. How often do you really need something the SAME day that isn’t a grocery item? In that scenario, how often is it that Amazon will actually be the most convenient option anyways instead of Instacart Gopuff or (hear me out) going to a store? Speed of delivery is not as big a factor as price and selection. Amazon is going to undermine the latter with this move.

The ability to transact at market speed is an impressive benchmark for any company. The ability to set the velocity of market speed faster than anyone else can imagine or compete with… That’s Amazon. In my opinion, from order execution to delivery, they are the best in the world.

Amazon Fulfillment is still getting faster with 60% of Prime orders placed this year arriving in 1 day or less. Last year, our average click-to-door speed was 1.9 days. It looks like we might have to revisit that number for 2024. Many retailers struggle to find the value of even faster ship times. What we see from the 180M member Prime customer base is "If I can't go pick it up, I want it by the end of the day". Bottom line for DTC retail is same day and next day shipping correlates to conversion and new customer uplift.
