"Despite this breakthrough, the taken for granted assumption that China’s new institutions naturally represent major power tensions still remains. Some observers have come to examine the effect of China’s new institutions on existing and emerging international norms, together with China’s aspirations for a positive status and identity. Indeed, these constructivist considerations provide a deeper appreciation of China’s foreign policy logic as they emphasize gradual global governance reforms through norm contestations and the need for positive recognition as informing China’s overall ambitions" (Gloria, 2021a; Reeves, 2018; Song, 2020).
New publication!
Asst. Prof. Enrico Gloria recently published a research brief with the Asia-Pacific Social Science Review (Volume 24, No. 1) entitled, "Pushing Boundaries: Current Trends in Understanding China’s International Institutions and China’s Continuing Rise."

We conducted an analysis to identify the TOP 10 countries by the number of ion channel publications per year, and we're excited to share the results with you.
We examined author affiliations from 354,677 original articles on ion channels, spanning from 1990 to 2023 (excluding preprints and reviews).
Here's what we found: up until 2021, the USA was the undisputed champion in publishing the most ion channel papers each year. But in 2022, China took over, pushing the USA to second place. Notably, China's output in ion channel research has experienced a remarkable surge, increasing nearly fourfold since 2010.
This shift highlights the evolving landscape of ion channel research, with China emerging as a major player.
This trend actually aligns with a broader global trend: in 2017, China overtook the United States in the total number of scientific publications (quantity), and by 2022, China also surpassed the US in contributing to the top 1% most-cited publications (impact). A recent study also indicated that papers originating from China often demonstrate high levels of innovation and interdisciplinarity.
Do you believe China's dominance in research, both in general and in ion channel research in particular, will continue to grow? What factors do you believe have contributed the most to China's surge in ion channel research output in recent years?

As the Economist reported, China has now surpassed the West in 8 out of 14 critical sciences. This is the first time a developing country like China is able to achieve this - to become a scientific superpower. China already caught up with all the revolutions that proved critical to the success of the West - scientific and industrial revolutions. As I have been saying before, materials science is the future. If your country is not investing on research and technology in Materials Science, your country will be left behind.
