📚 Sunday BYOBook Club, Vol. 12 📚
‘The Hero with a Thousand Faces’ by Joseph Campbell is most famous for its monomyth theory and the subsequent hero’s journey. This structure can be seen across all cultures and narratives. To the point, where skipping or missing essential elements of that journey can lead to disjunctive delivery, failed job interviews, or poor rotten tomatoes ratings.
The book presents a broad cross-cultural analysis while attempting to identify recurring motifs that suggest a deeper, universal human experience.
So how is this relevant to interpreting?
The career as a whole, along with each distinct assignment, follows the same structure.
1️⃣ Call to adventure. Everyone has their reasons for choosing interpretation as a profession: some follow in their parents’ footsteps, others possess all the right ingredients from the start, and some just like to fight against the odds.
2️⃣ Finding a Mentor. This could be in the form of a great teacher from a prestigious university or insights from a book written to whom it may concern.
3️⃣ Challenges. Studying, preparing for an exam, or mastering a new concept.
4️⃣ ‘Death and Rebirth’. A transformative event that can happen at any point: this could be during an accreditation exam, first booth experience, or even 20-30 years into a career.
5️⃣ Reward. We all have our values but usually, it’s in the form of satisfaction from making a difference in this world and some monetary remuneration so that we can concentrate on professional development.
6️⃣ Return. In the end, it’s not uncommon to become someone else’s mentor to perpetuate the cycle.
But the journey can also be seen at a smaller level when preparing for a specific assignment. We still pass through all those stages.
1️⃣ Call to adventure (a vacancy, e-mail, or LinkedIn DMs with a new project)
2️⃣ Mentors (books and all sorts of materials that help us prepare)
3️⃣ Challenges to overcome (research and continuous education seminars)
4️⃣ Mini ‘Death and Rebirth’ events when a new concept finally clicks or learning from a non-lethal mistake on the go
5️⃣ Reward for our effort
6️⃣ Return to square 1 with more experience and ready to go on another adventure, online or offline.
