Do you want young people you employ to have basic employability skills when they start a job? I am guessing the answer is yes. My son has just started his work experience week this morning. Thank you to Tony Buck at Oasis Studio Group Ltd for taking the time to showcase how their business works, for him to learn some softer skills, and to see how something he is interested in is put into action. We can't expect young people entering the world of work to have all the skills they need and to understand how a sector works unless businesses take a role in preparing young people for work. We have to collaborate with schools to achieve this. Shaping raw talent usually brings the best outcomes for the business in, productivity, loyalty and team spirit. I would love to hear how your businesses get involved and support young people to be work-ready. If you would like to and are not sure where to start we have a new regular email update for businesses highlighting employability initiatives that your company could support. Sign up to receive them at https://lnkd.in/eBUN9M_A If you are in the manufacturing property and construction sector get involved with Made in Chesterfield with workplace visits. I recently searched for “What is employability?” and found this definition: “Employability refers to a person's ability to gain and maintain employment.” While that captures the essence, I believe it can be defined more practically. To me, a person is employable when the value of their contributions exceeds their cost to the employer. This perspective highlights the importance of delivering value and demonstrates how crucial it is to align skills and services with organizational needs. What do you think? How would you define employability?

I always find this a good resource to use with students. INDUSTRY FOCUS: I particularly like the list of actual employers in the local area for each industry sector, which allows students to identify businesses that they could target for work experience or apprenticeships. 📋 LABOUR MARKET INFORMATION: It also helps them to understand how in the East Midlands, so many companies are micro/small🔬enterprises, meaning there are hundreds of potential employers out there that they could approach. KEY TAKEAWAYS: The big companies aren’t always the big wins! 🏭🏗️ Students can potentially be a big fish in a small pond; honing their skills, before approaching larger businesses🐠 Thank you LLEP for this excellent resource🙏🏼

The conversation surrounding the skills gap has never been more critical. Many experts argue that this gap is not just a result of educational shortcomings but also a reflection of societal values and perceptions. The way we regard certain occupations can significantly impact the availability of skilled workers in various fields. In the UK, there exists a tendency to devalue specific professions, often labelling them as less prestigious or important compared to others. This societal attitude can lead to a lack of interest in pursuing careers in these vital sectors, exacerbating the skills gap. So, why do we elevate certain roles over others? Is it due to historical context, economic factors, or simply a misunderstanding of the true value of these jobs? Consider essential services like plumbing, electrical work, and caregiving. These professions are fundamental to the functioning of society. Without skilled tradespeople, our homes would be unsafe, our healthcare systems would crumble, and our communities would suffer. Yet, these roles often receive less recognition and lower pay compared to more traditionally esteemed professions. How can we shift this perception to ensure that all occupations are valued equally? One approach could be increasing awareness about the importance of vocational training and apprenticeships. By highlighting success stories of individuals who have excelled in these fields, we can inspire the next generation to consider paths that may have previously been overlooked. Additionally, educational institutions and businesses can collaborate to create programs that emphasise the skills needed in these crucial sectors, ensuring that young people are equipped for the jobs that truly matter. Let's also look at how we can encourage a cultural shift that celebrates all forms of work? Community initiatives, media campaigns, and public discussions could play a pivotal role in reshaping how we view various occupations. By recognising the interconnectedness of all jobs, we can create a sense of respect and appreciation for every contribution to society. What do you think? How can we work together to bridge the skills gap while ensuring that all professions receive the recognition they deserve? Let's start a dialogue and share ideas on how we can collectively uplift all sectors of the workforce. #SkillsGap #ValueAllJobs #VocationalTraining #RespectForTrades #CareerPaths #CulturalShift #CommunityInitiatives #FutureOfWork #SocietalValues #EqualOpportunities #DeliveringCareersTogether

David Blunkett's recent report on skills for Labour stated that 'higher education institutions should integrate more project-based learning and employer engagement into their provision’ This is an important part of the employability puzzle and something we have been advocating for consistently over a number of years, such as in this article I wrote as far back as 2108: https://lnkd.in/e3X5P3tJ This more recent article discussed how learning from those activities needs to be scaffolded with careers education: https://lnkd.in/ede6nBjK Finally this one explored the case for moving beyond traditional placements and internships to deliver employability development at scale: https://lnkd.in/etnW86Ej
