At the recent Venture Leaders event, Swiss startups pitched innovative ideas to a jury, leading to Key Takeaways from the VCs on the panel:   1️⃣ Misconceptions European Founders Have Success in Europe is a great, but cracking the U.S. market requires local traction. European founders often underestimate how long it takes to get the first customer in the U.S. Only after securing those initial customers will their startup become appealing to venture capitalists (VCs) in the U.S.   2️⃣ Red Flags in Startup Evaluation A significant red flag when evaluating startups is encountering single founders. This implies that the complexities and challenges of running a startup might be underestimated, and the collaborative effort often required for success might be lacking. It’s tough for the founder to do it alone.   3️⃣ Advice repeatedly given to founders Leverage the higher valuation scales in the U.S. Start your business in Europe, then build and exit in U.S. Valuation will be twice as high.   This event not only showcased new ideas but also provided valuable strategic insights for founders looking to scale and succeed internationally. Dancing with the elephant Collaborating with startups is worthwhile, but certain rules must be followed to ensure mutual success. Our company's experiences are now included in the guidebook "Success through Innovation," created by HESSENMETALL in collaboration with Deloitte. Yesterday, it was presented at the traditional STARTUPS X HESSENMETALL 2024 event, an occasion particularly dear to me because I am convinced that cooperation between large enterprises and startups can achieve great things for all parties involved. SAMSON's strategy is clear: We must evolve from an 1st class valve supplier also to a provider of process intelligence to continuously improve our customers' operations. Machine learning and GenAI tools are crucial in this effort, helping us minimize waste, inefficiencies, and complexity. A concrete result: 🎯Our investment in 3D Signals, which developed sound-based AI technology, significantly improved the utilization of over 160 production machines in our plants, boosting productivity by 30% and saving one million euros annually. 🎯 Another example is the SAM Guard software acquired with Precognize, which expanded our digital expertise and opened new markets, such as the cement industry. #Brisbane officially ranked in top 40 emerging ecosystems globally 🚀 #GSER2024 “Brisbane distinguishes itself from other Australian cities with a range of innovation and entrepreneurial activities," the report's authors wrote. Defence technologies, cleantech, unmanned aerial systems, medtech, and deep tech are all well represented. This variety is reflected in the region’s startup success stories, which include Edtech platform Go1 (Logan), advanced machinery maintenance business GreaseBoss (Sunshine Coast), video-editing software provider Clipchamp, needle-free vaccine maker Vaxxas and Deep Tech-driven flood prediction company FloodMapp. The Global Startup Ecosystem Report is a comprehensive analysis of the current state of startup ecosystems worldwide. Launched at London Tech Week in partnership with Founders Forum Group , Informa Tech, and London & Partners. The 2024 ranking puts Brisbane in great company, with major innovation hotspots like Silicon Valley, New York, London and Singapore also ranked in the top 40.
