🐶 Did you know that 74% of citizens want better protection for dogs and cats? This week the Parliament Committees held debates on animal welfare. The first was on the welfare of dogs and cats and the second on animal welfare during transport. Across both debates, MEPs from all groups highlighted the importance of updating rules to be in line with citizens wants and also spoke of the need for improved rules on enforcement. Several MEPs mentioned that new rules without strong enforcement measures would have little added value. Our Chief Happiness Officer, Nour, has been catching up on the latest developments and told us to make the summaries of the debates available to you for free: 👉 https://lnkd.in/edZNziNc) 👉 https://lnkd.in/e4TkT3HX)

STOP PRESS!!! Australia moves to ban sheep exports 🎊🎊🎊 while Aotearoa New Zealand’s National-led coalition government is moving to reinstate farmed animal exports by sea. This is not what world-leading animal welfare looks like. Do we really care about that, or is it just a welfare-washing statement with more holes than Eliza’s bucket? We were the first in the world to ban the trade entirely. An amazing example of leadership that prioritised animal safety and really did make us world leading (regarding export of farmed animals by sea). Close to 40 000 people in Aotearoa New Zealand want to #protecttheban #staythecourse on #liveexports and prioritise #animalwelfare. Want help John get beyond 40 000 & protect the ban on farmed animal exports by sea? Then sign up! And please share. https://lnkd.in/gsXDvmxJ
BREAKING: Today marks a historic moment in Australian animal welfare, as the Australian Government has introduced legislation to phase out live sheep exports. We applaud the government for listening to the majority of Australians who oppose this cruel trade and delivering on its election commitment. 🐑 Read the full media release: https://lnkd.in/eVGsqBw6 #LegislateTheDate

The continued frustration with Co-op is that despite its senior leadership coming and speaking with myself and colleagues at the AGM in way, promising they would look into this and create an action plan, we have heard nothing from them since, despite polite follow ups. The thing is that the suffering of fast growing chickens is not going away and cannot simply be ignored by the Co-op. We remain determined to ensure that fast growing breeds are phased out in the UK, and the Co-op is very well placed as a self professed ethical supermarket to do this. Basically, we are not going anywhere. We have tried numerous times with Co-op to suggest innovative and pragmatic suggestions on how they could look to phase out fast growing chickens, but they are simply not coming to the table and that needs to change and it needs to change rapidly.
Co-op has already spent too long refusing the votes of its members. The biggest animal welfare crisis happening right now is Frankenchickens, and Co-op can and should lead the way. To stop the suffering of millions, they must stop selling Frankenchickens. #CrueltyAtTheCoop

We must progress in animal welfare, not regress. The presence of dedicated and educated staff is crucial for the well-being of both animals and humans.
