This week, we spotlight Mr. Green Trading Africa Kenya Ltd., another super impactful DOB Equity portfolio company leading the way in sustainable waste management and recycling in East Africa. Recently, members of our team, Karen Serem Waithaka and Frank Tobé Tobe, visited Mr. Green Africa’s operations. The team started the tour at a community collection centre where Sylvia, the Collections superstar took us through the sourcing journey. The team then visited the aggregation and sorting site before finally getting to the processing centre where the magic happens! The tour provided an in-depth look at their innovative solutions for plastic waste, from empowering local collectors through community networks to advanced recycling processes at their facilities. The visit reinforced the critical role Mr. Green Africa plays in addressing environmental challenges while driving meaningful socioeconomic impact. Mr. Green’s work aligns closely with our renewed strategy to create a more sustainable future for East Africa. We are proud to partner with Mr. Green to transform the waste management landscape while uplifting communities. #Recycling #WasteManagement #ReflectiveMonday

#GetToKnow our work in Rwanda #Week3 #Circular_Economy_in_Waste_Management Join us this Friday as we explore our approach to circular economy in waste management. Did you know that 550 tons of unsorted waste is collected every day in the City of Kigali? Rapid urbanization in Rwanda is driving a 14% increase in solid waste generation by 2050, making it the third largest emitting sector with 12% of total GHG emissions. In partnership with the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and the Government of Rwanda, GGGI Rwanda is leading Rwanda's waste transformation by integrating a circular economy approach into waste management across the value chain. Last week we returned from a very productive and insightful few days at the #Stockholm #WorldWaterWeek2024! We had the opportunity to connect with an incredible number of partners, new funders, investors, and organizations/companies that we are excited to collaborate with. A few of our key takeaways: * Industries - through circular models - hold the key to making big shifts in waste management, improved hygiene and climate change in sub Saharan Africa (and globally): It's clear that the path to lower CO2 emission will heavily depend on industries while it will have great impact on improved living conditions and food security for poor communities. * Changing political landscapes and financing mechanisms: with many governments moving towards more right-centered policies, we anticipate changes in public financing for water and sanitation initiatives. As a sector, we must prepare and explore alternative and smart financing solutions to continue our critical work. * Safisana’s Circular Model and setting the example: What we already believed was confirmed even more at the conference: our circular model stands out as one of the most sustainable solutions to address the global sanitation crisis and climate change, creating partnerships between industries and governments. And we are not alone: we praise our fellow circularity enterprises in the sanitation field: Sustainable Organic Integrated Livelihoods (SOIL), Sanivation and The Sanergy Collaborative / Fresh Life, Clean Team Ghana, Loowatt Ltd for expanding their businesses successfully! At least 18 dead and more still missing after Kiteezi landfill site collapse in Uganda due to a "structural failure in waste mass." The Kiteezi landfill is on a steep slope in an impoverished part of the city. Women and children who scavenge plastic waste for income frequently gather there, and some homes have been built close to the landfill. There is the need for a major transformation into the Waste management systems in Africa. Join the Africa center for Environmental transformation as they come out with key transformative policies that seems to provide connecting solutions to Environmental problems. #AFCET #Wastemanagement in Africa #Sustainability

Rwanda is setting a remarkable example for environmental sustainability in Africa. Known for its pristine landscapes and clean cities, Rwanda's journey towards environmental excellence is truly inspiring. In 2008, Rwanda became one of the few countries in the world to implement a nationwide ban on plastic bags. This bold move has drastically reduced plastic waste, contributing to the country's beautiful and clean environment. Moreover, Rwanda's unique community initiative, "Umuganda," involves a monthly nationwide clean-up day. Every last Saturday of the month, citizens come together to clean their neighborhoods, build infrastructure, and engage in community service. This collective effort fosters a culture of environmental responsibility and civic pride. Rwanda's commitment to sustainability doesn't stop there. The country has also invested in renewable energy, reforestation projects, and sustainable agriculture, aiming to balance economic growth with environmental protection. Rwanda's efforts are a testament to what can be achieved when a nation prioritizes the environment. It serves as a model for other countries aspiring to create a sustainable future. #Sustainability #EnvironmentalLeadership #GreenInitiatives #PlasticBan #CleanCities #CommunityService #RenewableEnergy #ClimateAction #Rwanda #Africa #GreenFuture #EcoFriendly #SustainableDevelopment #GlobalLeadership #Innovation #CleanEnergy #Umuganda #EcoWarriors

"Several weeks ago, Circular Business Platform and Waste Management Society of Nigeria (WAMASON), Lagos Council and by extension it's international counterpart, ISWA International Solid Waste Association, with the support of University of Lagos and the E-waste Producer Responsibility Organization of Nigeria(EPRON) and Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency started a journey to improve Waste Markets in Africa. Interestingly, with the increase of Advocacy on how Circular Economy can help stem down Waste Generation and improve Waste Management practices, stakeholders in the industry are beginning to explore the opportunities and solutions therein. In March 2024, the idea to establish a regional knowledge network around the topic of regulating Waste Markets in Africa was identified during multi stakeholder Circular Economy Strategy Week, inspired by the Consulate of Netherlands" - Circular Business Platform #Waste #Market #Africa #Circular #Economy #Netherlands #ISWA #Africa
