Why? It's great to be a 'goodie'...Mind Bicycle
Volunteering is vital to the fabric of our society, yet we are faced with a worrying trend. Figures also show a long-term decline in formal volunteering rates, having dropped by nine percentage points since 2011.
If we strip everything away and look at the core of what makes a volunteer, it's the feeling of 'doing good for good' or, you could say, being a 'Goodie'. Unfortunately, we are witnessing a worrying trend of declining numbers in our society not coming forward due to a range of issues: the current cost of living crisis, limited time, bureaucracy, paperwork, and funds.
Giving your time does not have to be rewarded in monetary terms, nor should it feel like a chore or unrewarding. Is there a way we could make volunteering feel less corporate, attract a younger audience, and encourage more people to come forward and enjoy being a 'Goodie'? Stopping the decline in volunteering numbers will be a key part of how we level up the country and overcome some of our biggest problems, like digital equity and inclusion.
