A niche in the food industry can be a successful venture if it is properly brought to the audience and delivered in a health-conscious way.
One such niche is the South Indian cuisine.
Divya, a CA who eventually laid the foundation of The Rameshwaram Cafe with her husband, identified its relevance, demand and scale of growth, making it one of the most famous joints that operates late till 2 am.
Divya Raghavendra Rao, Co-Founder & MD of The Rameshwaram Cafe, is a qualified Chartered Accountant with a post-graduate degree in Finance and Management from IIM Ahmedabad. Additionally, she serves as a Managing Committee Member of the Bangalore Branch of the South Indian Regional Council of ICAI.
Raghavendra Rao, Co-Founder & CEO, holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering and boasts over 20 years of experience in the food industry. As the founder and promoter of IDC Kitchen, he is responsible for overseeing operations at The Rameshwaram Cafe.
Divya's journey into the food industry began during her post-graduate studies at IIM Ahmedabad, inspired by case studies on global food chains.
Motivated to introduce traditional South Indian cuisine globally, she collaborated with Raghav, who sought her financial advice for his previous restaurant venture.
Despite initial family resistance, Divya and Raghav successfully opened Rameshwaram Cafe in 2021, choosing the name as a tribute to APJ Abdul Kalam.
Raghavendra and Divya enforce stringent guidelines for food quality and ingredient selection to maintain consistency across all their chains.
Notable rules include –
- The prohibition of baking soda
- Exclusive use of pure ghee without blending with oil.
- Preparing fresh batches of batter and chutneys multiple times daily
- Avoiding the use of refrigerators for a consistent taste experience.
Rameshwaram Cafe has grown to operate four branches in Bangalore, J.P Nagar, Indiranagar, Brookfield, and the latest addition in Rajajinagar.
In January 2024, they opened another cafe in Hyderabad. The cafe is also expanding internationally, with its first outlet in Dubai.
In India, it is focusing on expanding in tier-1 cities.
According to reports from HT, the restaurant reportedly earns ₹4.5 crore per month from each cafe – securing an annual revenue exceeding ₹50 crore and serving 3000-4000 customers per day at each outlet.
