THE CARER’S LEAVE ACT 2023 The Carer’s Leave Act 2023 came into force on 6 April 2024. This enables employees who are unpaid carers to ask employers for up to 5 days leave. The employees in turn are protected from dismissal for taking the leave. The Act means employees can take unpaid leave in full or half days, or in a whole block of 5 days every 12 months. The leave can be used to take care of someone who they normally care for and who has long- term care needs. This may be illness or injury likely to need care for at least 3 months, a dependant suffering a disability under the Equality Act 2010 or caring for dependants in their old age. 🚨 Law Change for Carers 🚨 As of the 6th April 2024 the Carer's Leave act came into force. 📜 This act provides carers with the statutory right to weeks unpaid leave per year to care for dependents! A ‘week’ means the length of time they usually work over 7 days. This can be taken in full or half days. A dependent does not have to be a family member it can be anyone that rely's on an individual for support because of either: 1️⃣ a physical or mental illness or injury that means they’re expected to need care for more than 3 months 2️⃣ a disability (as defined in the Equality Act 2010) 3️⃣ care needs because of their old age ↗ Carers UK have been campaigning hard for this for a long time and it is a huge step forward in the recognition of carers in the UK. In 2020, the number of people in paid work who were also providing unpaid care increased to over 7 million. https://lnkd.in/e_RWQudk To get more information about carer's leave and how to request this you can check out the government publication here: https://lnkd.in/ev-tfRXw Do you need help navigating this change? 🌟New landmark legislation for family carers, the Carer’s Leave Act, is now in effect across Great Britain! What's New? ⚖ The Carer’s Leave Act grants employees the right to up to one week of unpaid leave annually, to provide or arrange care for a dependant. Why Does it Matter? 🔢 Recent estimates suggest over 10 million individuals in the UK are providing unpaid care to their loved ones. This act is a significant step towards supporting them. 🏛 Championed by Liberal Democrat MP Wendy Chamberlain, the legislation aims to offer carers crucial time off for managing their responsibilities, enhancing flexibility and support. 🤗 CarersUK has praised the act for providing "essential employment rights" to those balancing unpaid caring duties with their jobs, and hope that the Act will improve carer finances, boost employer productivity, and bring economic benefit to the Treasury. Our Initiative: 🌳 As part of our You Are Not Alone campaign, we're focusing on the effective communication of the Carer’s Leave Act's provisions to Britain’s family carers, aiming to bridge gaps in awareness and offer advice as to the various support options available to individuals. 📈 Our recent polling has indicated that much more can be done to raise awareness of the provisions outlined in the Act: just 12% of England's unpaid carers claimed to have a 'good understanding' of its details, and what it might mean for them. 📉 Concerningly, more than half of carers polled said they were 'unaware' of the Carer's Leave Act's provisions, this figure rising to 77% among carers aged over 65. 📢 Through the You Are Not Alone campaign, we're committed to enhancing awareness and support for family and friend carers nationwide. Stay tuned for our launch in 5 days time, and read more about our campaign below, including our full polling report! https://lnkd.in/etRXuct6 #carersleaveact
