At Schneider Electric, we always think of the big questions that need to be answered to keep the lives electrified for generations to come: How can we accelerate Energy Transition, instead of letting it stall (due to grid congestion or political headwinds)? Can we use local renewables locally, thereby increasing grid efficiency (simply by avoiding Transmission & Distribution losses)? How can we defer or redeploy capital expenditure by reducing our peak demands on the grid? Can we eliminate (AC-to-DC) chargers from the e-waste? The common denominator in the answers is Direct Current (DC). And here is a DC microgrid example that could keep the 1.5 deg C target still in our sights. This is a second chance that we should take. Our #SecondGrid.

The previous round of CFI funding, released in January 2024, benefited 47 projects in 22 states and Puerto Rico, supporting construction of approximately 7,500 EV charging ports, but the FHWA received applications for 6x the amount of funding available. Today’s announcement reserves more than $520 million for some unselected first-round applicants who may be reconsidered for the current round of funding. FHWA will contact unselected round 1 applicants directly about this opportunity. We talk about access and decreasing range anxiety frequently. Ensuring that stations are operational when drivers pull up is critical if we want to support the transition. Previous reliability funding awarded approximately $148.8 million in grant funding to 24 applicants to repair or replace broken or non-operational electric vehicle charging ports in 20 States and were awarded to 14 State Departments of Transportation and 10 local entities. Let's look at the breakdown --The CFI Program is divided into two distinct grant funding categories and requires that 50% of the funding over five years is made available for both Communities and Corridors: 1. Community Charging and Fueling Grants: This program will strategically deploy publicly accessible EV charging infrastructure and hydrogen, propane, and natural gas fueling infrastructure in urban and rural communities. 2. Alternative Fuel Corridor Grants: This program will strategically deploy publicly accessible EV charging infrastructure and hydrogen, propane, and natural gas fueling infrastructure along designated AFCs. The Good News: In CFI Round 2, up to $800 million will be available for new applications (due August 28, 2024).
