32 so-called Homebuilding Skills Hubs will be created across the country, with places most in need of new houses prioritised. The government, which is working on the plan alongside the Construction Industry Training Board and the National House-Building Council, has pledged £140m to create the hubs, which will all be operational by 2028. It will mean that 5,000 more construction apprenticeship places will be made available every year. The announcement is a recognition of the lack of skilled workers in the construction industry that threatens to undermine Labour’s target of 1.5m homes over the next five years. The Labour Party have been terrible since getting into power, but this one initiative I can get behind: Five thousand more construction apprenticeship places will be made available due to a £140 million industry investment to get Britain building again. The government aims to bring 32 new Homebuilding Skills Hubs to deliver fast-track training to areas in need of housing, and give apprentices skills to boost housebuilding. The hubs will offer realistic working environments for training for trades including bricklayers, roofers, plasterers, scaffolders, electricians, carpenters and more. The government is working with the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) and the National House-Building Council (NHBC) to launch the hubs, in tandem with Skills England to identify the areas that need construction workers the most. Entering the Construction Industry - A Pathway to a Rewarding Career… This time of year marks the end of secondary education for many young people. While most have plans to further their education or start their careers, some may be wondering what their next step should be. If you're considering entering the construction industry, here's some guidance to help you move forward. Entering the construction industry represents a significant opportunity for individuals looking to embark on a fulfilling and dynamic career path. With its diverse array of roles, from skilled trades to project management, the construction sector offers a multitude of avenues for personal growth and professional development. First and foremost, exploring the various roles within the construction industry is essential for anyone considering this field. Traditionally, the industry encompasses trades such as carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, and masonry, each requiring specialised skills and knowledge. These trades form the backbone of construction projects, whether building homes, commercial structures, or infrastructure. Beyond the trades, there are also opportunities in construction management, where individuals oversee projects from inception to completion, ensuring they are delivered on time, within budget, and to the client’s satisfaction. This role requires strong organisational skills, leadership qualities, and a thorough understanding of construction processes. One of the most recommended pathways into the construction industry is through apprenticeships. Apprenticeships offer a blend of practical experience and formal education, making them invaluable for aspiring construction professionals. During an apprenticeship, individuals work alongside experienced tradespeople, learning the intricacies of their chosen field through hands-on training. This real-world experience is complemented by classroom instruction, where apprentices gain theoretical knowledge and learn industry best practices. Importantly, apprenticeships often lead to full-time employment upon completion, providing a seamless transition from training to professional career. For those inclined towards more structured education, vocational training programs offered by technical schools and community colleges provide an excellent foundation. These programs offer specialised courses in construction trades and management, covering everything from construction techniques and materials to project planning and safety regulations. Students benefit from state-of-the-art facilities and instructors with industry experience, ensuring they acquire the skills and certifications necessary to thrive in the construction industry. From my point of view “The best advice for entering the construction industry is to seek out an apprenticeship, which provides practical experience, training, and a direct pathway to employment”. www.alphasafety.co.uk IOSH South Wales Committee Member

The UK construction sector is at a critical juncture. With demand for skilled workers outstripping supply, the skills shortage has become a significant challenge for businesses across the industry. This shortage is not just a numbers game; it impacts project timelines, costs, and the ability to innovate. While the new apprenticeship skills hubs will tackle shortages, it remains to be seen how well the courses will be taught with a diminishing amount of experienced workers able to take on teaching roles. What steps do you think the construction industry should take to address this challenge?

Excellent piece in Eastern Daily Press today, following results day. There is a huge misunderstanding around Apprenticeships, and a misguided view by some that a Degree Apprenticeship is a 'lesser' route than the more traditional method of studying for a degree. Another common misconception, is that construction professions are not for those who thrive in academic subjects. That the word 'construction' means working in the trades only. This is a view held by parents and educators, and it is our responsibility to educate others, about the work we do. Architects, Civil Engineers, Structural Engineers, Services Engineers, Mechanical Engineers, Building Surveyors, Quantity Surveyors, Construction Managers and many, many more professions that support construction - all require a high level of learning and qualification, to become Chartered. Construction is a brilliant, fulfilling and inspiring industry (as my many contacts on here, who work in construction will agree). There are many professions available to everyone - for those who are academic, and those who favour the practical trades. We need everyone!! I am a Trustee of Construction East, together with Saul Humphrey 🌍, Jerene Irwin, David Henry, Stephen Nash, Jonathan Nelson and Karl Gessner 🧮. We have formed the Charity to improve the visibility of construction professions, and to work with education, to provide students (and mature students) with a cohesive message about construction, and the many careers that exist. More news to come from Construction East in the next few weeks, including the appointment of our new Coordinator. Construction Crisis: Over 400,000 Britons Stuck in Renovation Limbo A new report by Fix Radio's national construction audit reveals a shocking reality: over 400,000 people in the UK have waited more than a year just to find a builder to begin work on their homes! This is on top of hundreds of thousands more facing similar delays for plumbers, electricians, and other trades. These delays are a symptom of a much larger problem - a crippling construction skills shortage. The industry needs an additional 225,000 skilled workers by 2027 just to keep up with growing demand. This deficit has a significant impact: 🙁 Frustration for homeowners - Dreams of renovations put on hold, with the stress and inconvenience of extended waiting periods. 🙁 Economic impact - Missed growth opportunities and potential for a £98 billion loss to the UK economy by 2030. What can be done? ✅ Investing in skills development - Encouraging more people to enter the construction trades through apprenticeships and training programs. ✅ Highlighting career opportunities - Promoting the diverse and rewarding career paths available in construction. ✅ Technological advancements - Embracing innovative construction methods and technologies to improve efficiency and productivity. Is your renovation project on hold due to the skills shortage? Share your thoughts in the comments! #construction #skillsshortage #constructionindustry #uk #renovation #apprenticeships #futureofwork #myhiltigb

Over the last week or two I have been looking at why some Modular Build Main Contractors have enjoyed consistent success over the last couple of years.
