2 Ads, 2 emotions, 1 winner. The electric cycle market in India is still evolving and is limited to folks with high purchasing power. The market has 2 types of brands: 1. Legacy brands like Hero, TATA, etc. 2. Challengers like EMotorad But both of them have a similar TG which comprises folks aged between 14 and 35, typically from Tier 1/2 cities. The buyer wants the Electric Cycle for commute but in our country, it also becomes a status symbol of sorts. So, when I saw Hero Lectro E-Cycles (A Division of Hero Cycles Ltd)'s new Ad, I thought......would this TG relate to an AD that talks about the cycle being driven in different parts of the country to arouse patriotism? Or would the buyer want to relate to a cycle being driven by Dhoni who is the symbol of Cool? Both ads miss showcasing features in detail since they're more or less the same so the only thing that can help one of them sell more is emotion or how they connect with their TG. In today's age, just having GenZ act in your ad is not enough, you need to tailor your message as per their needs. Emotorad has been consistently doing this with their ads where they show how cool their brand is. Patriotism is proven to work but only against brands manufacturing abroad. In this case, the competition i.e. Emotorad is not only manufacturing in India but is setting up the largest manufacturing facility as well. If incumbents don't change their brand strategy, we'll see them dying over the next decade as purchasing decisions shift to the newer generation. I appreciate and admire the EMotorad founders for their innovative campaigns and support the brand for being creative. However, not everything that a brand does is right. In a latest post on Instagram, tobacco consumption is shown as a style statement. A bicycle is a clear symbol of good health and clean commute from centuries. But the visuals in this IG Reel paints a negative imagery. It’s a newspaper ad celebrating Onam festival with a QR code scanner that leads into the latest commercial of Dhoni. I feel Dhoni is just squeezed into a bad story board while making the Reel and expecting people to appreciate it. It doesn’t works like that, people will apply their mind and are able to understand what’s been fed into them. Whom to blame? the one who proposed this idea or the one who approved it? Either ways, the brand is shown in poor taste. This is the video I am referring to and I hope the founders consider my feedback constructively. Best thing to do is to delete the post, but I am no one to decide…what if the post goes viral? The social media manager may get a pat on his back and the next post on LinkedIn could be about his contribution to the Brand. Here’s the cool part: you just lock your phone in a secure little compartment, enjoy your movie without distractions, and come back to a fully charged device. It’s genius, isn’t it? Your nerves recharge with the film while your phone recharges on its own. Win-win! What struck me was how such a simple idea can shift the narrative. It’s not just about convenience—it’s about inviting people to be present in the moment, free from the pull of notifications. It shows how innovation, when done thoughtfully, can create meaningful value beyond the core offering. This left me with a thought: How else can businesses innovate in ways that aren’t directly linked to their products or services?
