Can leaders just have IT?
IT, defined as that intangible quality when you meet someone and immediately want to be a part of their team, to be inspired by them, learn from them, and be led by them.
There is, of course, a delicate balance in this. History has taught us that humanity has often followed seducers who have led their followers astray, metaphorically speaking.
But returning to the present, where we then and again encounter leaders who possess IT.
I spent 30 years of my life in a dressing room. While not many footballers have won Nobel Prizes, we had a remarkable ability to discern leaders who lacked IT.
Coaches who attempted to conceal their weaknesses through excessive theory, anger, arrogance, or digital tools intended to impress the players.
So, yes, I have encountered some who did NOT have IT!
Then there was our National Coach Egil Olsen, "Drillo," who undeniably had it. Primarily due to his knowledge and ideas, but also his ability to instill in us the feeling of taking on the whole world.
The reason I began writing this on Good Friday, however, was the news that Xabi Alonso has decided to remain at Bayer 04 Leverkusen
Alonso is on the verge of securing the Bundesliga -
title after FC Bayern München winning 11 in a row.
And mark my words: Alonso unquestionably possesses IT. Both as a player and as a leader.
He was a leader on the pitch for Liverpool Football Club, Bayern, Real Madrid C.F. and the Spanish National Team.
Mind you, this is only his first full season in Germany, but he has yet to taste defeat, and his team exhibits a clear identity and unity.
I have only encountered him in my capacity as an interviewer. I interviewed him both as a player and as a coach. And trust me, the BIG IT is there.
As he demonstrated with his decision to remain in Leverkusen. He could have managed Bayern and Liverpool. But he chose to stay where he is.
Conveying this message to his players this morning. Expressing it eloquently in a press conference today to take any pressure and attention away from the massive games coming up.
A significant credit to Simon Rolfes the Managing Director Sports, and his team.
Establishing a culture of growth as they strive to transform Leverkusen into a trophy-winning force.

🚀 Sales & Running: The Ultimate Marathon
As a sales trainer, I'm always inspired by the dedication and drive it takes to succeed in our field—much like the determination runners show in their sport. My brother, Thomas Neuberger, who co-founded Believe in the Run with his wife Meaghan Murray, just produced an incredible video showcasing their time in France during the Olympics, capturing the essence of passion and perseverance that every runner—and salesperson—embodies.
🏅 What Salespeople Can Learn from Runners:
1. Consistency Pays Off: Just like in running, consistent effort and training in sales lead to long-term success. It's not about quick wins; it's about building endurance.
2. Overcoming Obstacles: Runners face challenges like weather, injuries, and mental fatigue—similar to the daily hurdles in sales. It's all about pushing through and finding your rhythm.
3. Setting and Achieving Goals: Whether it's breaking a personal record in a race or closing a big deal, the satisfaction of achieving a hard-earned goal is universal.
If you're passionate about running and sales or just like being a part of our family, check out this video from France during the Olympics and Believe in the Run. It’s a powerful reminder that the principles of success are universal, whether you're on the track or in the boardroom. Let’s keep pushing our limits!

Ahh, the life of a Change Manager. If you think it’s all about guiding others through the change curve, think again. Spoiler alert: we ride that emotional rollercoaster too, and sometimes (all the time) we get front-row seats to the 'valley of despair'.
How ironic! Here we are, the so-called 'experts' in navigating change, yet we find ourselves grappling with the same feelings along with everyone else. It’s like being a tour guide who occasionally gets lost but still manages to find the way back with a smile (and maybe a few extra grey hairs).
Yesterday I listened to AECOM’s President, Lara Poloni, and ANZ Chief Executive, Mark McManamny, highlight the progress we’ve made on our Sustainable Legacies strategy. From creating a culture and framework from which to orient ourselves, to the tangible outcomes on projects - it’s all a testament to everyone’s dedication, resilience, and persistence.
It's given me an opportunity to reflect on the last few years working as part of the transformation program team for Sustainable Legacies. As a Change Manager, the opportunity to collaborate with the best and brightest, help solve complex challenges and witness the moment when someone (including me) crawls out of the 'valley of despair', are what drives me. It's a fantastic feeling hearing your leaders speak so proudly of something you've been part of. Especially when at times the journey has thrown you a curve ball (or five).
Change efforts for programs such as Sustainable Legacies are never truly finished. But it's like climbing a mountain and finally reaching a viewpoint where you can see the breathtaking landscape below. Onwards and upwards!
When our global President, Lara Poloni, is back on home soil, our team is always excited to hear from her! 🌏✨ Today, Lara and our Australia New Zealand Chief Executive, Mark McManamny, spoke to a packed Brisbane boardroom for an ANZ-wide Town Hall about our priorities for the next 12 months. From our focus on client care and global collaboration to our excitement about the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games (only 2,894 days to go!) – there’s plenty to look forward to! 🎯🤝🏅
Our team across ANZ tuned into the live stream to hear from Lara and Mark first-hand about how we can better support our clients and prepare for a great year ahead. Shout out to Adam Fearnley, our host in Brisbane, and Jonathan Reynolds from Connect, our early professional committee, who hosted an engaging Q&A session. 🎤👏 #AECOMLife#inspired#DeliveringaBetterWorld
Sha’Carri Richardson’s journey to the Paris Olympics was highlighted by the emotional support of her family, who celebrated her qualification at the U.S. Olympic Trials. After winning the women’s 100m with a season-best time of 10.71 seconds, Richardson shared a heartfelt moment with her family in the stands, emphasizing the importance of their unwavering support.
This moment perfectly encapsulates the power of the C4 Matrix from the FIT methodology. Sha’Carri’s success is not just a personal victory but a testament to the power of Communication, Connection, Collaboration, and Community.
Her family’s presence and encouragement exemplify how a strong support network can propel individuals to achieve their highest potential. Just as Richardson’s family celebrated her achievements, building and nurturing dynamic communities can help us all overcome challenges and reach our goals.
Sha’Carri Richardson’s journey to Paris is a powerful reminder of how the support of family and community can propel us to achieve our dreams.
